Good info here:

I'm building the Monogram kit - but I'm going to display it as the full stack - not accurizing or even assembling the stage engines. I did, however order the Real Space CSM resin kit for the stack. The kit CSM and LES are a joke.

I was about to get a Revell. In other respects, the Revell sounds like a better kit, and I thought I could make the mods to the CSM easily enough, but you've given me something to think about.

I didn't know the Airfix kit had been re-tooled. I noticed on the Airfix website they are re-releasing the Saturn 1B at the end of the year. Will this also have some re-tooling?

The Saturn 1B will have the same retooling. Plus, they are also going to offer the Saturn V Skylab version with the orbital workshop in place of the S-IVB with CSM and LM. It will be a launch configuration version only, but it at least has a properly tooled rear end. So if one wanted to do the work to make a 1/144 Skylab, at least part of the work has been done for you.

BTW, one thing Revell really screwed up on with their last issue was the decals. They printed what lettering should have been in red in BLACK instead. So you practically need to acquire some aftermarket decals to correct that mistake as they never offered any reprints for this oversight. No biggie though as aftermarket decals should be acquired anyway. But at least the current Airfix markings are useable for most builds.

As for CSM mods, the problem with both the original issue of the Airfix kit and the Monogram kit is the CSMs were a little too skinny and they look weird on the stack when you notice them. The new Airfix CSM looks the part just fine. Only real way to correct the old ones is to acquire a resin CSM and LM garage set from Realspace Models. Those will work great, although in my case I prefer to work in styrene as much as possible.
