robw_uk
Ok, so the MB326 is done and dusted, the Dragonfly is in the paintshop so start to wheel out the next kit. Going with the Fuji T-1A (NMF version). The kit is a little on the sparce side for detail so I am going to tackle the cockpit... Have found a few images but anymore would be greatfully received.... As we are approaching Christmas, my modelling space will be turned in to Santas South Tyneside Storage Facility for the forthcoming future which means no spray painting (need to finish the Dragonfly before then) so that means I can really concentrate on the cockpit on this one...... Photos of the kit will be up soon..... Edited February 14, 2011 by robw_uk

robw_uk
finally getting ready to break this.... this is what I am up against.... but I am determined to make some improvement to the cockpit (the detail on the seat is about as good as it gets - 2 seats and a flat base... no IP (there are decals but no parts) or anything else........ KIT BOX IMG_9632 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr MARKINGS I WILL USE IMG_9633 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr SPRUES IMG_9634 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr SEAT IMG_9636 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr IMG_9637 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr so the plans - have some very good sources (thanks Peter) of work to put in on this.... while lack of paint area has meant work on the dragonfly is at a halt, the scratchbuilding on this can now start... plans are 1) detail seats (need a lot of work back & sides, hollowing out and filling with cables etc 2) detail cockpit - side & main IP 3) detail wheel bays - will look at this at least, seems to be one thing a lot of people do if nothing else so would be good to add to my skill set 4) maybe add radar boxing in nose started with the seats - managed a bit more reshaping and to hollow out (just) the headrest. Not sure if I can open up the sides of the headrest (there is a hole on the sides of the headrestwhich have some cabling in it), might leave it for now and see when the bucket seat is complete. Anyway, photos with original and modded seat IMG_9823 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr IMG_9824 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr IMG_9826 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr next steps 1) fill the gap between headrest and back support - this should go down on the same line 2) cable boxing on sides 3) cabling on sides and in headrest 4) open sides of headrest (perhaps)
robw_uk
ok.. more photos of a seat - tell me when you have had enough... added the extra side units - the ejector handles are mounted on them - and then final sections of rear plating. Still need to open up the sides of the head rest an dthen cable it all - then it needs cleaning/tidying. 2nd seat is running behind but getting there... have started loking at the rest of the cockpit, added a half-bulkhead behind the front seat and will work on the side control panels next (while finishing the 2nd seat) then the 2 IPs (unfortunately I will need to remove the rear console block that comes in the kit - not resemblance to actual shape so going to rebuild it. Final aim is to have a single unit cockpit (both IPs, seats and side consoles) to add into the fuselage..... so photos _MG_9827 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9828 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9829 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9830 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9831 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr

robw_uk
a quick verbal update.... seats : work has continued on the 2nd seat, now getting close to looking likethe first (not identical but not too bad)... cockpit : started work on the front half of the cockpit. built the side control banks and a (bad) IP. struggling to get the shape of the IP, some part to do with my ineptitude but I also think the shape of the coaming that is in the kit is a bit off... well there will be something IP-like in the front.... the side control units seem a bit narrow - think my modified deats are a bit too wide, but you cant see much anyway and, looking at photo references, the side work doesnt have much and is mostly hidden (some strange configuration of the upper bulhead (below the canopy) obscuring the sides.... tried to mimc that too rear cockpit : removed the moulded IP between frint & rear seats as it is the wrong shape. Will add a cruver coaming more akin to the real thing and then an IP air brake : have also moved outside of the aircraft to the air brake. Looking at photo ref half (or just under) of it contains a box and the rest some wiring - have put the box in so will then work on the wiring. some extra detail will need to be added once the fuselage is joined so next steps (apart from photos)... 1) complete rear seat 2) work on rear IP, rear side units and start to look at the behind rear seat area 3) continue to wire the air brake unit (the holes in the air brake itself will be address later 4) start to look at the wheel well details to see what can be achieved what I can say so far... apart from a few size issues, th seats dont look too bad an dthe side panels at the front I can live with..... need to review the front IP - I think it will "do" but might see if it is posisble to improve it slightly... all in all I am enojying building my cockpit.... it is actually relaxing to look at photos, loko at shapes and try to piece them together (it might not look good but it is better than 2 blank seats and no IP0 photos later or tomorrow....... robw_uk
photos to go with the above.. I know it is not precise but when the cockpit is installed and the fuselage closed it looks busy which, at this scale, is all I can hope for at the moment.... _MG_9832 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9833 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9834 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr
robw_uk
guys, can I get some advice.... as I am building up the cockpit detail I am now approaching the wiring stage. There seems to be a lot of wiring behind the seats and this is where I am a little stuck. Should I 1) fix the seats in place then wire in 2) mark where the seats go and wire to that opint 3) not bother wiring (I will do the bits that go directly on the seats as that is to be done with the seat out the tub) 4) somethnig I had not thought about I am enjoying tinkering and, compared to the basic starting blocks. think I am making progress... just want to see what else I can achieve inside before I hit the air brake and wheel wells (practising where really it cannot be seen)
robw_uk
All, updates.. the side consoles front & rear are now fitted and I have started tyo add some basic details, seats are ok, still some more detail to add to them... have done a bit of clagging in the wheel well, it looks messy as the glue smudged the pencil marks, but once painted and dwetailed at least it should loko tidier.......... photos _MG_9835 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9836 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9837 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9839 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr still not sure on wiring at the back of the seat.... need to add the IPs as well which is a challeneg, makinmg sure they are in the right position so that I can close her up - lots of dry fitting.... robw_uk
some photos of where I am now... I think ready for the paintshop (should I attach the seatbelts before or after painting?) I know some of it looks ragged but, for scale, the dials (ie the hole part) are .6mm diameter, plus a lot of the detail wont really be seen, its just there for impression.... _MG_9870 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9871 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9873 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9872 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9874 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr have also done more work on the wheel wells, air brake housing and the air brake itself (opened the holes up to match the original but the inside is not accurate, may sand that down and build it a little more accurately)
robw_uk
managed to get some paint and dirt on it... dot filter for the muck (too much?) _MG_9875 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9876 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9878 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9880 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9881 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr think my macro lens is throwing up more than the naked eye can see..... anyway once it is buttoned up you wont see much of it anyway.... chukw
Say, Rob- you're really going tp town with that cockpit! Those old kits with the blank pits are nothing but great canvases for the scratchbuilder. Nice work- though it looks a tad too dirty to my eye. The jet in your link looks a lot cleaner- but maybe your pilots like to eat lunch while on their missions! Keep up the good work- and cheers! chuk

robw_uk
well the cockpit has been assembled and attached to the first half... must say the fit itsnt as bad as I thought it would be (and yes I have been dry-fitting a lot)... think I will need a bit of trimming on the front IP, eventhough I (sort of) measured it and dry fit it, things are always different when you try and combine it once it is glued (maybe when I dry fit there was a bit of wriggle, or perhaps its not quite in the same place... anyway, not blowing my own trumpet but, considering where I Started from I am not unhappy with my work... will look to button her up later then move on to the wings and other bits...... and try to improve my filling.sanding _MG_9883 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr
robw_uk
progess (pics to come)... all now built and silver painted (grey primer, gloss black undercoat and humbrol 11...)... its not terrible (I can manage 1 colour painting).... next is some shading of the silver, masking for the day-glo orange and then tyhe aluminium for the exhaust areas.... photos soon

robw_uk
robNice work on the cockpit...seats look good to too. :) thanks for that Holmes... have enjoyed working on an empty canvas to create something less empty..... some pics of it silver... since these were taken I have added a little dark silver (5:1 Silver:Gloss Black) to some panels (movable surfaces only) and broken off one of the horizontal tail planes - since reattached but needs sanding/filling... will also do a mid silver (10:1 silver:gloss black) and a light silver (5:1 silver:white) to break up the monotony of the whole thing (and also to allow me to hit the panels that have a little damage to them - see the 2 photos for what I mean)...... _MG_9884 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr _MG_9885 by rob_william_worth, on Flickr next update will be when the silver shades have been done (after that I need to mask up the orange markings......) robw_uk
hmmmm orange is a bit pale, but i am going for "faded"..... well considering the kit is 20+ years old the decals are not too bad... only trashed one (lost 1/3 of the thin red band - luckily that is on the bottom so not visible in normal view ;-)).... usual prep - KLEAR to adhere to surface then KLEAR on top... seem to be coping with raised & engraved detail ok..... next step, full KLEAR then do some weathering (wheel wells, air brake and exhasut area) plus add all the sundry external bits & bobs.... Edited February 4, 2011 by robw_uk
robw_uk
masked & oil filtered the exhasut area (black, white, thule blue, burnt umber and sienna I think were used).... looks nice & matt vs the rest of the silver... need to let that cure before matt varnishing, then I can add the sundry finaly bits & call it finished.. not going to panel wash it as a) the majority of the detail is raised nad I cant find evidence in pictures of it being overly dirty.....
