Kalashnikov-47
Hi.... Has anyone used kit decals from the Tamiya 1/32 F-15C? I've heard some not-so-good things about Tamiya kit decals in the past, but I like one of the marking options offered in the kit that are not available from the aftermarket. Also any tips and secrets on using the kit decals would be most welcome! Many thanks! - Patrick
The Dude
I did the Alaska 'AK' jet from the box and had no problems with the decals. Came out quite well actually, they were a little thick but once I sealed them all was well. Hope this helps.
dmthamade
I've built 4 of the Tamiya F-15 kits, all using the kit decals. They worked fine, any thickness disappearing after sealing in clear coats. Something to be aware of, the markings are for an Eagle in the Mod scheme. The Stars and bars on the sheet are black, they should be the opposite of the color they are against, FS36176 or FS35251? Some of the stenciling is like this as well. Check references, Afterburner decals did a sheet in 1/48 http://www.afterburnerdecals.com/d48/d48.html take a look for reference. phasephantomphixer
Hello Patrick, I am also planning to use the F-15C kit decals for AK. My trick for thick decals is to pre-shade panel lines, seal with future-apply decals, seal with Future again a few times (keep it light around the masked canopy, pylons, etc.) let it cure, then micromesh (or buffing sanding board) directly over the decals until you cut down the thick carrier to the same level as the future. weather, then final flat coat. I did this with Hasegawa decals and they look painted on. HTH. Erik.
Jennings
I've built 4 of the Tamiya F-15 kits Why!?!
Scooby
Why!?! He obviuously likes the aircraft, I'd build my one lone 1/32 Tamiya F-15C if there were more decal options out there. I know there are errors with the kit but I can live with them.
galileo1
Why!?! Man, I wish I had 4 of these babies in the stash. In fact, if it weren't for Erik (phasephantomphixer) I wouldn't even have the only one I currently have (I did just acquire the F-15E though). And yes, I too have been looking around for aftermarket decals but they are next to impossible to find nowadays in this scale. Jennings
Where do you put four of 'em!?! My house isn't that big! I *love* F-15s, but wow...
dmthamade
Where do you put four of 'em!?! My house isn't that big! I *love* F-15s, but wow... They're in my display case along with 12 other 1/32 builds. One of the Eagles is a USAF bird, the others are 2 Strike Eagles and the other is a JASDF bird. Still have two more in the stash, one will be a JASDF Aggressor, the other a USAF Aggressor. The kit decals respond well to Microset/Sol and i do use hot water to soak them in. They look thick on the sheet, but they do work well. There isn't a lot of choices out there aftermarket, too bad because they are impressive when done. Done

Many current ANG options http://caracalmodels.com/32scale.html TWO Bobs has recently done the BITBURG Ealges http://www.twobobs.net/index1.html And lets hope that JMEL (speed hunter graphics) does some 1/32 sheets for the F-15C :pray:/>
sharkey
Thanks Tiger. I'm thinking more about the paint job. I don't have access to model master paints, only vallejo and vallejo air. Was wondering if anyone could recommend some vallejo colours to match the eagle above.
Recon
I built two of Tamiya Eagles with custom decals for the 318th FIS and 5 FIS. Best looking F-15's out there. Mike
jenshb
Where did you get the 5th FIS markings from Mike? AFAIK, they're not available in 1:32? Agree on the 318th and 5th FIS Eagles:) Jens

fulcrum1
I have the Twobobs F-15 Bitburg sheet and it's a gem, plenty of options. I've never been a fan of Tamiya decals, but they do work and I've seen plenty of builds with the kit decals, heck, for awhile they were the only game in town.
dmthamade
Hello sharkey!! I can't give you Vallejo colors. I used Lifecolor for the FS 36251, Lifecolor# UA 034. For thr lighter grey I used Tamiya XF-19 which is closer to FS 36231. This was my build done a while ago. I'm sure the Vallejo site can give you the correct #.
