Tilt
Isn't Nevada where the "Mustang Ranch" is located? :D It is....and I'd be glad to take Nevada!! But we're not keeping Dion. She'll have to leave!!
niart17
Well, you see Bill. This is a tricky thing. There's a few States that we most certainly do NOT want. And it always seems they're added in as a package deal. It's just not gonna work. I mean come on......we gave you Celine Dion so that we wouldn't have to take possession of "those" States!! :D No, I was referring to ALL the baggage that comes with California (I'm looking at you Michael Bay!) not other states. Bill
flyfort17
Okay, I'll let you in on the truth. It's us (Canadians). We're beginning our attack on the US. We plan to ocupy California. It will become the 11th Canadian Province - known as Nosnowland. We'll go there on our holidays!!So if all you Californian's would be so kind as to quietly head over to Nevada and Arizona. But don't get comfy there - we'll be taking those places next. Can you fix our traffic problems when you get here. Please :D

Chris707
Flightaware has US Air flight 808 from Hawaii to AZ in that area, at the approximate time. There's been no Orions dropping sonobuoys off LA, no weird radio traffic, no bases being locked down, and apparently no other reports save from the news helo. So I feel safe in calling this one a 757 ;-) Chris
Spruemeister
Except 757s don't go vertical and leave a massive contrail, sure. Airliner. Somebody's flaunting a bit of "Ooo, look at what we can do". There should be enough radar coverage to plot Point A and Point B. Not that us common folk will ever know for sure. Rick L. Chris707
It's not really vertical - that's the bearing of the flight relative to the camera and the curvature of the earth producing that effect. There's a longer version of the imagery - I don't have the URL handy, but at no point on it do you actually see the object leave the ground/ocean - the contrail just seems to point that way. flyfort17
So Son, How do you like the tour of the cockpit of Spaceship Two? Awesome Dad. I get to be the test pilot on the first powered flight in a few weeks. Cool Dad. What’s this red button do? NO SON, DONâ€T PUSH THA………………………………………………….
Jennings
I dunno, if that's an airliner it's got to be a MIGHTY big airliner with one single MIGHTY big engine. Truly, if it does turn out to be an SLBM, it's pretty damn scary that the Navy thus far doesn't seem to know about it. Even if it's not a Navy missile, it's pretty damn scary that the Pentagon doesn't know what it is...

SBARC
Either it's an accidently launch by the US and they ain't admitting it or an accidental launch by someone else such as the Russians etc.......or it was launched on purpose by some crazyassed government such as N Korea. If it was a missile launch by a non-US sub......I hope the US Navy is out there tracking it down. I seriously doubt anymore information about this incident will be revealed to the public at large. Stuff like this gets sorted out in private behind the scenes.

Its an aircraft with real cold air up there, if you look at :54 you can just make out the two contrails, The spread out that looks like a launch is dissipation seen at the horizon. Keep in mind the film is also from another aircraft which can play with ones eye/ view point.

zerosystem
http://www.bing.com/maps/Default.aspx?v=2&...vl=12&sty=h not far from los angeles as the contrail flys...
TomcatFanatic123
Come to think of it, I was driving by Vandenberg at 1700 local time yesterday (on my way home from my math class), so if it was us, I would've seen it, as I always glance out toward the base on the off chance something interesting is buzzing around out there...and I didn't see a damn thing. Keep in mind the film is also from another aircraft which can play with ones eye/ view point. Seeing a couple stills of the footage, I concur. It is most likely a contrail. The sun angle and the temperature at altitude (not to mention the wind direction) likely had an effect as to how the contrail looked as it was getting distorted. Last Saturday, I saw something similar as an airliner cruised over Omaha at about 35,000 feet. From its perspective and how distorted the contrail looked when I first glanced at it (i.e. wide like a cloud), I had a brief thought about it being a missile as well. But when the plane cruised over my head, I knew it likely wasn't that at all.

Jinxter13
This may sound like it's outta left field, but on occasion there have been reports of USO's (Unidentified submerged objects) if it was one of them or a rogue sub (N. Korean, or other entity) and they goofed!!, but good they'll get caught with their pants down and give the USN a reason for unscheduled target practice, for the L.A. class of Hunter/killers. Frankly I don't see any of those two happening, It was something and whatever it was/is has Five sided Ft. Foulup jumping in all corners of the place.

The weather ballon that incidently has a portrate of Kim Jong-il on it ?
Jennings
The North Koreans don't have a sub that can launch an SLBM, nor do they have an SLBM to launch from it even if they did have such a sub. J
Treewizard648
Its probably just a new Russian sub with a nearly silent propulsion system test firing a dud missile to see what happens. Nothing Jack Ryan can't handle.
