Badger 105 Patriot

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of getting this one:

http://store.midtennhobbies.com/huge-sale-...intl-p3307.aspx

I've read good reviews about about, particularly with regards to the ease of cleaning up. I'm planning to use mainly Xtracrylics, Tamiya Acrylics, MM and Humbrol Enamels.

I mainly build 1/72 jets & props.

Any feedback? Also, what is the nozzle size? It doesn't say so on the website.

There seems to be another version of the same AB but with finer tip:

http://store.midtennhobbies.com/badger-105...05-1-p2804.aspx

Not interested in this one 'cos I already have a Tamiya Superfine for any 'fine' work. I haven't actually used it though since I bought it on impulse during a sale & have yet to even get a compressor (which I plan to do so during the next couple of weeks).

So my plan is to use the Patriot 105 for general camo of 1/72 jets/props & the Tamiya SF for fine work (eg Luftwaffe mottling). What do y'all think?

I must emphasize that there is NO standard on what is called fine, medium, or largee nozzle of airbrushs. In the following, I am using general terms. The size that I cited are +/- 0.05 mm, etc.

Badger makes the Renegade Infinite with a 0.19 mm and the SATA a 0.25 mm nozzle, and call them ultra-fine. I ordered the Patriot 105 with a fine nozzle which comes with a 0.51 mm nozzle. The standard nozzle for the Patriot is 0.76 mm. It is the same as their 100, 150 and 155 airbrushs. Nothing wrong with Badger's terminology, just different from others.

For example, the Iwata has nozzle sizes of 0.18, 0.35 and 0.5 mm. They call these fine, medium or general purpose and large nozzle. Similarly, the Paasche Talon has 0.25, 0.38 (standard) and 0.66 mm nozzles. The Harder Y Steenbeck has 0.15, 0.2, 0.4 (default) and 0.6 mm for the Infinite and Revolution lines.

All these numbers mean nothing until you try the airbrush and find out what you like the best. The Patriot is sort of like a quick draw type airbrush and it seems to be what you are looking for to complement your Tamiya superfine. It is the needle shape that matters more in defining the airbrush characteristics. The Badger Patriot has a double cone, and relatively short taper. You can do a soft, pencil size line with the medium needle fairly easy but the transition from enough to too much paint flow is pretty touchy. There are some discussion on that topic at FSM forum. The title of the thread was on Badger Sotar, but it diverted into needle shape and fine line drawing.

If you decide to buy the Patriot, make sure to order the airhose or an adaptor for the Tamiya (standard Iwata type) hose that you currently use. Badger uses proprietary thread on their airbrush and is not compatible with other airhoses.

Any feedback?

I tried one for two weeks and didn't like it. but that's just me. The trigger felt slippery. The double tapered needle didn't provide fine control. Sure, it was easy to clean, but so do other gravity feed airbrushes. It's too bad because on paper, this airbrush has a lot of potential. Do a search for "airbrush" in this forum to read many more related threads.

I used a patriot 175, and now have a H&S evolution. The H&S made me realize that the double tapered needle Badger uses is indeed sometimes hard to control in comparison with the single taper needle other manufacturers use. My 175 is a great airbrush that I still use, but not for fine work.

The 175 is not the Patriot. The Patriot model number is 105, and the needle is not the same as the 175.

I have the Badger Patriot 105 fine and still do. The trigger does not feel slippery, but it is too tight on mine. I prefer the smooth and precision feel of the Iwata and Harder & Steenbeck trigger. But with its larger nozzle and short needle taper, the Patriot is a much more forgiving airbrush. I can spray MM acrylic without thinning and get away with it. The Iwata and Harder & Steenbeck are more sensitive to paint thinning.

The choice of airbrush depends on what you want it for. As a backup to the Tamiya superfine, it may work out good.

Thanks everyone! Loads of good information here

Gd pt about the nozzles. The Japanese ones seem to have different size definitions than the non-Japanese ones. Basically, I want something that can handle 1/72 camo such as the 2-tone grays of 1/72 F-15s, or 'Nam era F-4 Phantoms, etc and I'd like to do these free-hand without spending too much time on masking & such. I'm hoping the standard 0.76 mm nozzle of the Patriot can do this.

And thanks for the tip about the Patriot's hose. Didn't realize the propriety nature of this AB. If I do decide to get it, I'll be sure to get the hose too.

As far as I know, the Patriot comes standard with a fine nozzle. Mine did. I think it's a great general purpose airbrush. You can see details and a sample of its output in my review here.

Don, earlier when I was googling for reviews of the Patriot 105, yours was one of the first websites that I found. Great info there, esp about the cleaning of the airbrush. Awesome general tips for a beginner like me too. Well done, sir! :)

Thanks Kei Lau! Yup, basically that's what I'm looking for:

1) Something forgiving (esp for a AB newbie like me)

2) Something easy to clean-up & maintain (which is what I've gathered based on all the online reviews I've read)

3) Something suited for 1/72 scale aircraft.

Thanks again, everyone :)

Jackman, if you order from MidTenn by the 22 you can get an even better deal on the Patriot. Here's a link MidTenn Pre-Christmas Sale Click on the link above the Patriot brush and you'll get to the page where you can select which one you want. You can get it with a hose for $1 more than their regular price. But it comes in a cardboard box rather than plastic. Does include some paint and needle lube though.

Tony

PS...Hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Thanks, Tony! Actually, I don't think you're breaking any rules because MidTenn also posted on the ARC Buy & Sell forum about this sale. Btw, any difference between the cardboard box & plastic? It's just the packaging right? I've never ordered from them before, so I'm not sure. Thanks

I guess it's just a cost cutting thing. Same brush, different packaging. My 360 came in a plastic box with a snap lid, my Sotar came in a black cardboard box. But neither one spend any time in the box. Either will be lined with fitted foam, protect your brush in shipping and can still be used for storage.

I've never ordered from MidTenn either but it looks like a good deal to me. I've been happy with the Badger brushes I've used. I don't have a 105 but use the fine needle/tip/regulator in my 360.

Don

Don is, as usual, exactly right! ALL Patriots come standard with the FINE needle/nozzle. And also with very solid customer support.

Regarding the comment above about the Iwata Revolution BR being 'superior' and costing less.. superior is a tough term to chase around. What one person decides is better or superior has more to do with that person's experience, and is not neccessarily true for many other people. Cost is a moving target also. In the link above, the Revolution BR is, I think, $72.95 plus shipping. They offer free shipping for orders over $90. Our Badger Patriot is on sale right now for $64, or $71 if you want a hose shipped with it.. sent directly from Badger. Both prices include shipping.

When it's not on sale, our regular price for the Patriot is $71 and domestic shipping is always free for any Badger airbrush. I'm sure if you shop around you'll find many other prices.
