This is just a thought, but I was curious of what my fellow ARCr's think of having a model of the year contest? It would not be the same as a group build or a local contest. There will be no particular scale or subject that the contest will be limited to, all are welcome. I think we should keep it very simple. There will be gold, silver, and bronze aka 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I know group builds are limited to 6 months but maybe this should be for the whole year deal. Enter what ever scale you want and submit photos. At the end of the year a decision will be made. (still undetermend by who) of the best looking model. Again no catagories just an outright 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any scale. It would be like a Grand Champion and 2 runner ups. No flashlights, no rules just pour your heart into the model and lets see the magic happen. Maybe we can get some of our sponsers to provide the prizes and also be a part of the judging. Again this idea is just in the baby stages but I think it would be tons of fun and all scales are welcome. Would't it be nice to see a 1/72 subject beat out a 1/32 subject..

No thanks, I don't do contests. Just build models.

Respectfully sir, but don't you do group builds and there are awards offered in them? Again this is just an idea and would love to hear all thoughts.

I would love seeing the members who actually participate in a groupbuild to win said ''awards''

Just sayin' a groupbuild is not about recognition, it's about building together with a subject in common; prizes, such as kits, decals, etc.. are just a bonus, but not the theme a groupbuild revolves around.

Very true. But we tend not to have "a judge" decide whose is best. Very subjective and leads to bad mojo. I have been in many group builds, won a few things and gave away a few things over the years as well.

I like the entire "randomniss" (nice word eh?) of it all.

Oh yes, Dont call me Sir. I was a Sergeant and worked for a living!!!!!

Also , no worries. Your posting an idea. No one is likely to attack you for it. A valid idea, just not one that works for me.

Can I make a suggestion? that larger bold font is a really tough read mate. It's like a great big block of yelling alphabet letters plopped into a white box.

I don't post much here at ARC anymore but I've been around quite some time.

I think your idea has good intentions but I can pretty much guarantee it would go very badly for ARC. Good intent, bad idea.

No offense I hope

Cheers and take care.

While I enjoy taking part in model competitions, I just don't think it would work online. Even in the "real world" judging is very subjective (I'm not saying that judges are biased or prejudiced..all the judges I've ever worked with were honest guys who did their best.) Judging models against one another "in the flesh" is difficult enough..judging them strictly from photographs would be next to impossible to do in a fair manner, unless you could somehow guarantee that all were photographed under identical conditions.

I think websites like ARC are a great way for us to simply share and admire each others' work, without the pressure of competition.

Hello Iron Man,

Like most folk I wonder whether an actual contest would work but I do like the idea of ARC Model of the Year.

Would a "peoples choice" scheme work?

Perhaps there could be a sort of ARC Oscars?

All members could nominate their favourite builds from the year and a short list of the top five could be drawn up in each scale/genre. After that, a poll could be run to work out which models won their respective category then the finalists would run for the #1 spot of ARCMotY 20**........

There have been some fine builds over the year in every scale and genre so it would be nice for those folk to get a little extra recognition. Steve might even run an article on it on the homepage just for fun.

I'd suggest that nominees be taken from the Display case or ARC Homepages so that everyone gets a chance to participate.

Since the models in question are n't being built specifically for a competition then there should be no pressure.

It might even be possible for any number of categories to be drawn up to include the full range of skills and experience

so that everyone gets the chance of a mention.

When I read the title of the thread I was thinking about a poll where ARCers would nominate the best kit of the year.

That said, some form of ARC awards would be interesting, so long as its in good fun. Things like "most posts", "best post", "funniest post", best online build... maybe even a "best of" in each sub-forum?

The only downside is that there would be some work in culling the posts to say, the 5 nominees and then tallying up the votes. And the inevitable person who is left off the list....but we are all adults, no?

If the recent threads on the new Chinese fighter can be considered evidence, I would say probably no.

In fact, anything that approaches politics.

To be honest, I would predict endless flamewars and locked threads if such a "serious" contest would go forward.

I agree that some lighthearted and not so serious awards, would probably be fun.
