mikestomcat
Hi Everybody, Well I've finally started my Recce Phantom today. I managed to cut out the aera for the seamless suckers to fit into the fuselage. I'm still waiting for some silicone and resin to turn up so I can copy my masters, that probably won't turn up until next week. So I'll turn my attention to doing the cockpit next, I'll use the kits cockpit but will most definatly add some scratchbuilt detail. I'll use resin seats as well... Hopefully I'll have some cockpit pics in a day or two... Edited January 18, 2011 by mikestomcat

MoFo
Small correction: you're not building an RF-4EJ. You're building an RF-4E. THIS is an RF-4EJ - a straight gun-nosed Phantom with external camera pods:

Dave Williams
And to jack the thread even further, Hasegawa released a 1/48 RF-4EJ kit, which included the pods. Kit #09537.
mikestomcat
Hey Guy's thanks for the heads up. I've gone in and edited my mistake, also managed to bring the pics back  Mike...
texgal45
Mike, Good work on the Phabulous Phantom. I never did understand all that alphabet soup of letters after the basic number, but I love the ol' F-4 in any version. Grandma L
mikestomcat
Thanks Grandma L, I've now attatched the air intakes, put in part of the camera bay and also opened up one of the panels to show some wiring and plumbing. I decided to use a resin cockpit but making it fit was fun. I'll use the kits cockpit panels with slight modification to get it more accurate, and tommorrow hopefully I'll cut open the fuselage and show some more plumbing and also cut open the other door for the camera bay, like I did on the first fuselage half. When all that works complete it'll be of to the paint shop, so I should have some more pics then... :D Mike.
musangpulut
the resin pit look super nice! all the best with the build!
yardbird78
Those resin intakes and engine fronts look great. So does the cockpit and camera area. Your build brings back memories of many, many hours I spent in Viet Nam analyzing imagery from the RF-4Cs out of Tan Son Nhut. Darwin

Haven't you had a sweet Thai girl at your side when analyzing pics in the darkroom!??? *jokemodeoff* nice to see u fit in an aires pit...I m just thinking about that too for my RF, but there s only a pit for the RF-4B, and not for the E! Or am I wrong? There s one for the E version too? Or do you take the B pit and convert it into E? (I think the most differences will be at the WSO place).
yardbird78
Ah! Haven't you had a sweet Thai girl at your side when analyzing pics in the darkroom!??? Actually, there weren't very many Thai girls running around Viet Nam. The local, indigenous, female population was mostly Vietnamese, Chinese and some Philippinos. Besides, the USAF security folks frowned rather heavily on having uncleared, civilian types in our areas where we had classified material. It's a nice thought though. Thanks Darwin As far as I know there is only a cockpit set for the RF-4B I used a F-4C cockpit to start with and double checked my reference to make it a RF-4E. I'll use the Hasegawa cockpit panels, with modifications made to the rear cockpit panel. According to what I've read a RF-4E pit is very similar to the RF-4C pit, and a F-4C pit isn't all that much different from a RF-4C pit. (besides I already had an Aires F-4C cockpit set in the stash :P ) Mike
tobiK
hi Darwin, yep, sure in Vietnam there are vietnamese girls! hehe - sigh, the reality strucks hard sometimes! So you had to wait for a day off to relax. Analyzing pics must be detective work! Mike, ok, now I see the way you go. I thought about the a similar solution: to use eduard RF-4E colored PE set for the IP and taking a resin pit. Maybe a cheap one, is there a F-4 pit from true details? jmel
and a F-4C pit isn't all that much different from a RF-4C pit. I guess that's true in the sense that they're all F-4s, but there are substantial differences in the front and rear cockpits between an F-4C and RF-4C, even in model form. Hi, As far as I'm aware True Details make a F-4E and F-4J cockpit set. With some minor adjustments the F-4E cockpit would be a good alternative. If you can get hold of Reid Air Publications " The Modern Phantom Guide " it's an awesome source of reference. Mike.

The sidewalls and side consoles are similar enough, so that if you use the F-4C you can make the changes needed to make it a RF-4C... Mike.
mikestomcat
Hi Fellas, I've managed to get a little bit of painting done in the last day or so, and hopefully I'll get the rest of the pit and camera bay finished. As soon as I get the fuselage together I can move onto the RF-4C that's in need of some attention... Tll next time, Mike.
