strawberry mivi
I am very impressed with the detail of the engines, but I'm not sure how accurate they are. There is even surface detail on the back faces, that will never be seen, but this does I think allow a repair diorama to be done with engines out. My painting followed the colour guide but doesn't look very good, never mind. (spot the minor error)
strawberry mivi
Finally. I'm building wheels up so have cut and repositioned the undercarrage to suit. Wheels will be added once the main colour (gloss black) has been added.
Dirkpitt289
I never knew they had a crew for the 1/72 scale. That's too cool and something I might have to look out for in the future.
strawberry mivi
The crew are courtesy of the Revell RAF WW2 set. All aboard. Now I can start to think about closing the fuselage.
Bigasshammm
That's really cool! Is that a set of figures that's readily accessible to purchase then? I want to do my next 1/72 Fort in flight and a full crew would be sweet.

strawberry mivi
Bought off the shelf in Sheffield, Yorkshire about 6 months ago. £6.99 it says on the box.
Bigasshammm
Wow 25 figures! Looks like 11.89 on Amazon. Ordering one next weekend.
B-17 guy
Why cant someone make a set like this in 48th scale
lenny100
I have been watching this with great interest as i was part of the recovery operation in 2000 when we recovered most of the bodies of earl aber and his co pilot. the aircraft parts we removed were donated at no cost to a local air group and they were planning a display commemorating the action of the two pilots, who were still in there seats when the plane finally fell out of the sky, missing the town of harwich by only a mile. this photo was taken only hours before its final flight and as you see the nose art of the franklin mint is wrong as by this time she had been given clothing, although it was a little skimpy Edited April 21, 2011 by lenny100
strawberry mivi
Thanks for that, never seen that photo before. BTW, my lady will be shown as God intended, none of this PC-gorn-madness. 1st mask up. 2nd take mask off. 3rd add prepainted parts
strawberry mivi
ps If you look carefully in one of the photos above you may spot the hole drilled in the fuselage for the perspex pole. This is the precise centre of gravity for the kit, incidently exactly where one of the injection gates is.
strawberry mivi
If a B17 expert sees this can they tell me which nose that is in lenny's photo above? Is it the shallow nose or the long one? I'm swayed towards the shallower one.

I'm swayed towards the shallower one. I think you are right near as I can tell. Lookin' good, you are almost done!

strawberry mivi
Closing in on the finishing line. Still to do: Klear add props add gun barrels add Monroe bomb in free fall. The aircraft is mounted on 5mm perspex rod into a hardwood plinth. Decals are homemade on a laser printer I've gone for grey squadron codes as quoted in 'The Mighty Eighth', pp293, rather than yellow or white as seen on the Franklin Model and the commercially available decal sheet. The "Tondalayo" name is in light blue, rather than yellow, just because. Miss T is naked, personal choice!
strawberry mivi
Finished. Photos entered into the Museum. Having taken the photos bits stand out as needing tweaking but I know in my heart of hearts, now that it's done, it will stay done. The photos also remind me that I live in a very windy country, so we get lots of dust, unfortunately. The kit. This is probably the only modern kit I've ever built, completely OOB without major surgery. It is an amazing kit. Everything just fits. The figures needed adjustment, nothing in the aircraft did. I used 2 swipes of filler at the wing root joint and that is it. The level of detail is incredible. This could be built as a B17 undergoing a full overhall, all the internal detail is provided, even on the backs of the engines. The only query I would have is the shape of the bomb bay racks. Would they not be 2 vetical racks not tapered as shown in the kit, so that the maximum space for munitions is available? Looking at the Academy kit (Memphis Belle B17F) seems to show this. btw, the Academy is not in the same league as the Revell. Sorry if this upsets a few but it's true.
