Skyraider Maniac
Hey Guys! Posted this over in the netgear forums, but I figured there are probably those within our ranks that understand the situation better! I'm just copy & pasting as I'm pretty worn out from trying to figure this out.... ...so here goes..... I just got the Netgear N600 (WNDR3700v2) today, and have hooked it up in my house. Wireless works great. plugging the laptop into the router works perfectly fine; however, the Router will not recognize that the xbox is plugged in (NOTE: I'm hardlining my Xbox with an ethernet cable, and not going the wireless route). Talked things through with both the Netgear tech support folks, and the xbox live tech support folks, and they're both baffled...I understand the concept of plugging things in just fine - but I have no clue why the router will not show the xbox as being plugged into any of the ports, when it is. I tried direct linking the xbox directly to the modem as I've done many times before - works like a charm, no issue. I go back to plugging it into the router; doesn't exist. when I check it on the xbox side, the only message I get is "To use a wired internet connection, make sure an ethernet cable is connected to both your console and your router or modem.", and it is - so I am at a loss for what to do. Computer still works fine on either the wifi or the direct link to the router - so the router ports seems to be working just fine. Modem works just fine. I'm even using cat 6 cables on both the computer and the xbox, and still nothing (I even used the cat 6 when direct linking the xbox to the modem to ensure that it wasn't a cable issue; but I used the same cable on the computer when linking to the modem). I'll be honest, I don't really understand the technical aspects of the setting up a router - I can make passwords for the wifi, and thats about it. as far as stuff like "port forwarding", etc... goes, I haven't a clue. So if anyone out there has an idea about whats going on, I'd love to hear it. once again, when computer is plugged into a port ("1, 2, 3, 4"), light comes on and there's a connection; when my xbox 360 is plugged into any port, no light comes on and there's nothing saying it's connected. When xbox is plugged into modem, works perfectly fine. Cat 6 was used in setup (replacing cat 5). both cat 5 & 6 have been used with computer when linking to router, both work perfectly fine. any ideas? Thanks! sooooo...any takers?? KursadA
Xbox Live connectivity requires external access to some of the ports on the router, so you will need to set up your router accordingly. Before we get there, I assume you tried at least a couple different cables and plugging it into different ports on the router to rule out a problematic cable or router connector. Can you confirm? The following pages have good information, and reflects the setup that I have in my house. Can you do an Xbox Live connectivity check and let us know what it says? http://www.ianarchbold.com/xboxlive/index.html http://rogerdickeyjr.com/how-to-open-xbox-...ort-forwarding/ http://rogerdickeyjr.com/how-to-setup-your...warding-part-2/

I'll definitely save those websites for later. As is stands though, that still doesn't address the problem. I have tried several different cables, and a combination of plugging them into the router and modem. when plugged directly into the modem, everything works great. when I direct link the xbox into the router - it doesn't even show up. i.e. the Router doesn't recognize anything is attached and doesn't assign a ip address... when the computer is hooked up, direct link into the router and not wireless, it shows up just fine. I've tried this with all 4 ports on my particular router and computer shows up, xbox doesn't. as for the xbox live conectivity check - I can't run it when xbox doesn't realize its hooked to something - the error mentioned in the first post tells me to hook up a ethernet cable, when it's already hooked up. so, until I can get the router to realize the xbox is hooked up, and get it to assign it some sort of address to it - I can't run the connectivity. BTW, my nat settings are open - I'd assign a DMZ, but alas, I can't get an address.... does that make any more sense??
Liberator24
You have definitley got me thinking...... Usually that woudl be a cable or port issue, but you have run the bases and it sounds like that is not an issue. I will ask around at work...... Good luck! -Jim
fulcrum1
Wow, I dunno. Seriously? I'd take it back and see if you can pick up a V1 on sale or wait for the new series of routers to roll out (3800 and 4000) within a few months. I have the V1 and haven't had a single issue...best router I've ever owned and the wired/wireless works with everthing I've thrown at it (desktop, laptop, fruitphones, xbox, ps3, wii, etc). According to these yoohoos there isn't much of a reason to pull the trigger on a V2 over a V1. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wi...ll=&start=
Skyraider Maniac
I took it back to staples today and switched the netgear our for the cisco linksys of the same equivelent - and it worked right off the bat!!! NO ISSUES  The guys at the store were baffled as well - but they said this one works better, and in 15 min, it already has! So, in short, problem solved! Thanks for the input! Skyraider Maniac
Quick update: finally heard back from some guys over on the netgear forum (you guys are fast! and helpful!! they are sloooow, lol...), and apparently it's a chipset compatibility issue between the N600 (netgears top of the line from what I've seen in my local stores) and the Xbox 360 - just figured I'd throw that out there for anyone who's a console gamer looking into a router... I asked about the PS3 out of consideration (don't have one, but figured it be good to find out for others...), and will pass that on if I hear anything. please note, this is in regard to a wired, ethernet, connection, not wireless.
