Phil marchese
David Rapasi 's statment should not be taken to mean the A-24 never again flew combat sorties with the AAF elsewher. They did. The 7th Air Force Commands (FOWARD) use the A-24B in the Marshalls campaign against the by-passes islands. The dive bomber raids, often had cover by the 45 FS sand finished P-40N familiar to modelers. From memory, the 531 BS(D) is what I recall. A MARC search on the serial range of the B series will indicate the survivablity during the dangerious six weeks in Jan and Feb 1944 low level missions. The low level attacks claimed nearly a fourth of the 41 BG B-25 Mitcells including half of the 396BS. But it was a daring plan by the 47 BS and 45 FS that put an end to organized air opposition in the Marshallls . With the Old Crows as bait. the perfect timing of the 45 sprung the Maleolap Trap on the japanese just as the enemy ffixated on the bombers.
