Russki gun 'copter

G'day people,

I decided to start this little fella as I thought it had been waiting patiently in the to do pile for long enough.

As usual, the first item completed was the cockpit.

The kit supplied detail is basic but adequate. The canopy is very very heavily framed and little cas be seen through the tick plastic. My example had flow marks in the clear plastic. I don't think that this is fixable so I will have to live with it. Zvezda supplies two aircrew figures. These came up okay after some paint. I decided to install them to help obscure the lack of cockpit detail.

Test fitting the canopy shows that the fit is generally good, however the rear portion is lightly narrower than the fuselage.

Nice start on the pit. Wish you all the best blending the canopy into the fuselage! Is this the A or N boxing of the kit?

G'day Sebastian,

The Zvezda boxing is the "A" boxing, I think the Revell kit is the "N", and yes, blendding the canopy will be a fun job!

I have managed a little more progress.

I have started assembling the weapons. First up is the 30mm gun.

ItalRafaleMupdate3014.jpg

ItalRafaleMupdate5008.jpg

The other weapons included are a pair of B-8V20 unguided rocket pods as well as a pair of 9K114 "Shturm" anti-tank guided missiles in a cluster of 8 missiles per side.

MilMi-28update2016.jpg

The unguided rocket pod tubes are molded as solid, so I had fun drilling out each tube and the end plate to give the impression of depth.

I have also been busy sanding the fuselage seam. the fit has been very good so far.

ItalRafaleMupdate5002.jpg

Sometimes I find it easier to cut off small details moulded along a fuselage centreline and add replacements instead of sanding around/over them.

looking great so far Pappy!

Thanks Mental

Thanks for that, I didn't realise Zvesda made both versions. I was only aware of the Revell Mi-28N. My kit is the Zvesda Mi-28A. Thanks f0r posting the links.

Very neat.. love it

I like the way you paint the figure.. what paint did you use?

Thank you Mario. The figures were painted mostly with Humbrol enamel paints. I don't remember the exact colours used apart from flesh, black and white. The camouflage upper flights suits were whatever colour looked good at the time!

Anyway, I saw a Lee 1/72 Mi-28A kit a few weeks ago. Any info about this kit?

Sorry Mario, I know very little about Lee kits. From what I have seen, these look like poor quality copies of other kits. It may be a copy of the Zvesda kit? I would be interested to find out myself,

cheers,

Pappy

G'day people,

A little update for today.

ItalRafaleMupdate4011.jpg

ItalRafaleMupdate4009.jpg

The left and right engine nacelle assemblies have been assembled. The engine exhaust has a plate that lives in the bottom but it just leaves some gaping holes. I don't know if this is accurate but I added some very fine mesh to the openings to add a little interest.

Next up, the undercarriage was cleaned up and fitted. I left off the tail wheel as I thought it looked fragile, but the main gear looks sturdy enough. I added some very simple brake line detail with some copper wire and replaced the entry step with fine copper wire too.

Next up was a job I was dreading, blending the rear of the canopy into the fuselage. test fitting showed a pretty decent step. prior to starting, I tinted the canopy a dark orange colour. the pics I had seen showed that a heavy smoke tint was used, with a slightly orange hue. It looks overdone at the moment, hopefully it won't look so bright once the canopy has been painted.

G'day people,

Today's progress.

The fuselage and engine assemblies are together, and the engine nacelles have been attached to the fuselage completing the main assembly. The tedious chore of masking has also been completed, so the fuselage is now ready for painting.

buccupdate2014.jpg

The gun, main / tail rotors and ordnance have also been assembled and these will be added once the fuselage painting has been completed. I left the tail rotor stock, but I thought the kit's moulded on main rotor blade dampers looked a little chunky. I cut off the kit items and replaced them with some scratchbuilt items.

After painting, the main rotor assembly now looks like this:

The fuselage also had the first colour applied, a home brewed pea green. I don't know what ratios I used, I just kept adding lighter and darker greens with dashes of yellow and brown until I was happy with the shade.

This is looking good, I haven't seen an Mi-28 built in quite some time.

I have both the Zvesda Mi-28A and the Lee Mi-28. As far as I can tell, the Lee kit is a copy of the Zvesda with identical sprue layout. The Zvesda kit has noticably sharper casting so between the two I would go with the Zvesda, but the Lee kit isn't terrible.

Very nice Havoc. The green is especially interesting.

Thanks, I use Gunze colours as they are mostly semi-gloss, so come decal time there is no need for a gloss varnish and they spray beautifully. This will be a 4 colour camo so this is the initial colour.

Me either!

G'day Aaron, thanks for that. As I suspected the Lee kit is a copy. I have only seen a couple of Lee kits before, these were very poor copies of the 1/48 Academy F-111 kit,

Its looking sharp. Not Familiar with the color combo of this helo. Can you post a photo of the real one.

Oliver

G'day Oliver. I'd like to but my hard drive died two weeks ago which included the pics I had. The pics were taken at an airshow and the paint was glossy and very clean.

I have subsequently seen pics of this aircraft and realised after I have finished painting that:

The colour matches are good

The paint demarcation were hard edged rather than the feathered edges I have!

The underside colour may be a light blue rather than grey.

My version of the left side camo pattern is not very close to the original.

Why is it that I find all these great pics after I finish painting a model?

cheers,

Pappy

G'day Oliver, you won't have to wait too long!

Here is my recently completed 1/72 Zvezda Mi-28A. The paint scheme represents an aircraft displayed at an airshow, I think it was Le Bourget, but I am not 100% sure. I found some better pics after I had finished painting it that the scheme had a hard edges paint demarcation, bugger, still I am happy enough with it.

Overall, not a bad kit, it went together very quickly. The detail in the cockpit is very sparse, but not that much will be visible through the thick plastic. I added the included crew figures to obscure what detail there was.

The only area that I had an issue was the fit of the rear canopy part to the fuselage, mine had a pretty good sized step requiring shimming with plastic card and some filler. The rest of the kit is pretty hassle free. The decals went on well and behaved themselves too, which is more than I can say of my last eastern european experience (Roden uughhh)!

Onto the pics
