For Canadian stuff, CF-100's and CF-101's regularly escorted Bears off the coast, just like CF-18's.

Sabre's also were allocated for strike escort roles in Europe although their primary role was air defence. CF-104's are out (the world's only A2G-only Starfighters) and CF-116's (CF-5's) were primarily strike & training. The outside choice for Canadian stuff post-1947 would be Seafire XV's & Sea Furies, which provided escorts for Firefly V's and Avengers operating off RCN Carriers in the late 1940's and 1950's, Banshees too, although their primary role was Air Defence as the Bonnie had lost her strike tasking at that point and was doing ASW.

It's CF-18's only for escorts which actually saw combat though, since the Forces didn't do much in the way of strike packages before Desert Storm.

Ooooh, then I do have options - got a Clunk and a Voodoo in my stash, too. Though probably the CF-101 is out, as I've kinda been planning to do it as the Electric Voodoo. So Clunk or Desert Storm Hornet...

Oh forgot to ask

Anybody have any info on the Air Force One escort ?? like what unit what type of plane ect

Thanks

Neo

I would guess FF coded F-15s around home base. Then whatever squadron is available for where ever the big expensive plane was flying. For example. With air force one currently in Hawaii I would bet HNG assests would have been ultilized.

  • 1 month later...

I am thinking about joining this GB, but I want to know if I could enter an EF-111 as an escort? The idea being that when the Air Force introduced it, it was designed to go in with a strike package to provide jammer coverage and go out since it had both TFR and supersonic capability like the F-111 strike birds. It was used in that role in Libya and Desert Storm anyway (and it managed to down an Iraqi MiG by running it out of gas). I know it is a bit of a stretch, but I think it might work and it would have no bombs hanging from it (or air to air for that matter).

I looked over the previous posts. An EA-6B Prowler tends to orbit more rather than staying with a strike fleet (as such I don't think of it as an escort much). Ravens would act more as direct escorts and a blanket jammer. BTW, since part of their jamming package was kept in a canoe housing in what occupied the former bomb bay in a normal F-111, they had no room to carry a gun (I think the F-111D and some prototypes were the only ones potentially fitted that way). But, if a Raven got an interceptor fighter too close to it, it could pour on the coals and go supersonic on the deck to avoid getting shot down (as one did in Iraq).

Hi

thanks for your interest in the GB.

Unfortunately i cant let that one fly! As mentioned in a previous post(quote from a previous post) hence beaking one of the main rules on this GB is to carry Air to Air ordinances

Well according do WIKI these birds dont carry any Air To Air ordenance (there is an optional canon on the EF-111 but its in an intenal bay guessing AG purpose)

Cheers

I paid $500 for an escort in Vegas once, and got some "in-progress" pics, too. Does that count?

-only if you were 20% (cockpit stage) complete, before you began ?

Well, they keep saying that if it stays up for more than 4 hours, you should see a doctor. If he can keep it up for 6 months, I'd be truly impressed......

I'm in!!! Here's a question if it counts as an escort. I have a picture from the last squadron I was in, some of us were riding in the Omega Tanker to a detatchment out west, and four of our birds flew off the wingtips and took gas on the way out. I'll have to dig the picture out later, its a real picture not digital, there are a few with two Hornets on each wing. But does that count as an escort, because if it does I have a decal sheet for VFA-34 from the time period of the photo that I've been dying to use. If not, oh well, there are pleanty of other subjects.

There's a support aircraft GB starting in March(?)over at AeroScale. I bet your tanker would fit right in. I'm going to be doing an ESCI US-3A for it.

I may have changed my mind...instead of an F-4B or J, I might be doing a P-51D. Because I got some really cool decals the other weekend.

Well make up yer mind already! w00t.gif

Our GB page is active at the bottom of the main page. There's a Official Entry Form there.
