Eastern Airlines DC-7 at FRG

Recommended Posts

We had a DC-7 arrive at FRG this afternoon, N836D, finished in Eastern Air Lines colors. It will be used to film scenes for a new TV show pilot. For the filming, the left side of the aircraft has temporary Pan Am markings applied over the Eastern scheme. I was able to get out to shoot the arrival, and stuck around for a little after-dark fun...

We heard him check in on tower freq, and tower said "The museum called and asked if you would do a low pass..." :P

Thanks guys!

Any idea what the show is about?

The huge success of Mad Men has prompted ABC to develop a 1960s drama on the allegedly glamorous world of Pan Am pilots and flight attendants, Variety reports. Sony Pictures TV is behind the project, the entertainment industry newspaper writes, which came from an idea by a producer who was a Pan Am flight attendant 30 years ago.

Hi Moose, Thanks for the pics I'm extremely fond of this bird, and have many memories of her and her sisters when they were in daily operation. Hal Sr

Yes it is in town for about two weeks according to the http://n836d.com/ website.

I had the great pleasure of flying on board this aircraft during this past years AirVenture in Oshkosh.

Thanks again! Here's an update - they added the Pan Am blue ball on the tail yesterday. Looks like filming will be Thursday and Friday, with a departure Saturday.

So Thursday night they started filming - I caught a couple of shots from across the air field of the DC-7 along with the Airpower Museum's C-47.

They ended up working from about 1am until 6am, with about 300 cast and crew - the scene they are filming has the Pan Am plane flying refugees out of Cuba following Castro taking power. There was a large group of extras, staged out of the AAM hangar, dressed as either soldiers or refugees.

Tonight (Friday) they actually started filming much earlier - I was down there about 9pm, the road past the hangars was closed by the police, but I was again able to get a few shots from across the field.
