Thinking out loud, re: Y1B-17

Recommended Posts

Been wondering how many other people are like myself and would like to have a Y1B-17 in 1/72 scale in their collection, but don't want to go to the hassle and trouble of the old Rareplanes vac or trying to cobble together their own conversion?

Had an idea and was wondering if others might be interested in seeing if we might be able to make some noise and get a certain group of manufacturers interested in doing a conversion.

My idea is to utilize the already existing Academy B-17B, but then for the MPM group of companies to introduce a nose conversion, cowls, upper cowl intakes/exhaust and any other applicable type things that could help out. Obviously if MPM were to do a complete aircraft it would be expensive and might not be a great seller, but what about a short-run conversion to help get the existing kit the rest of the way there?

Considering that the short-run kits take some modeling skill anyway, the MPM group could really tap into something here and come up with a great conversion and show in the instructions how to do any other mods (shortening inner cowlings, etc.) that the conversion couldn't cover.

Thoughts?

JC,

They could actually get three kits with a few extra parts:

1. Boeing Model 299 - need new lower nacelles of interior engines and new landing gear

2. Y1B-17 as you mentioned NOTE: both 299 & Y1B-17 have different wings - so the supercharger intakes and air exhaust vents on the wing need plugs

3. Y1B-17A which is basically identical to the B-17B except cockpit forward on the fuselage.

A conversion is doable. Decals would be fairly simple to add. The vac kit is a real bear
