Yet another flat coat question... Dead flat

Recommended Posts

I've searched and searched, but here I am making another flat coat thread.

I just used up my last bottle of the old-formula Pollyscale flat coat and I'm searching for a replacement. I grabbed a bottle of MM Acryl Flat and it sprays well without frosting or clogging, but it still has a matte almost satin sheen to it. I was misted from a distance, and one spot where I let it build up enough to look "wet" turned out more satin that the rest.

I don't suppose thinning it would have any effect, so what do you guys do for a dead-flat finish?

Thanks!

Brewer

Hey Brewer,

You should still be able to find the Polly Scale Clear Flat anywhere they carry the PS Railroad Colors Line. Try Micro Mark or Walthers Train Supply.

Gunze flat clear (NOT the flat base) is great. I got mine from Lucky Model and love it--sprays easily, dries dead flat with no frosting. For Vallejo, try their Game Color or Model Color flat coats. They're pretty nice and very similar to the Model Air version, and just need more thinning if you want to spray them. I've found them at Squadron and Lucky Model.

The new stuff will turn frosty white even if you stare at it.

I stocked up on Polly Scale clears last year; 10 bottles each of flat and gloss plus five satin. I have not had this problem. though apparently, everybody else has. Whatever. . .

The best I have used is the Gunze Clear Flat. Second, Vallejo Model Air Flat Varnish.

The worst by far has been the poly scale which gave me a frost finish not matter what I did. Tamiya flat base with future was also frosty for me.

G'Day Brewer. I swear by Gunze acrylic clear flat (H 20). I thin it 50/50 with GP/General Purpose thinner (from a aar parts shop) and spray away for a dead flat finish.

Good luck. George, out..............................

Thanks for all the input guys! I went ahead and stuck with the MM Acryl Flat for this project. Thinned it a bit with Acryl thinner and misted from a distance, and I'm happy with the results for this project. You guys have given me lots of options to try, so I'll try them all and see what works for me

Brewer, when I first went to Vallejo, I tested it out on gloss black. I sprayed it neat and got some frosting. I thinned it a bit with windex and found the sweet spot with no frosting.

The Gunze was pretty much fool proof. I think I should stock up from Lucky Model.

It may be too late--it's listed as "available" already, so they don't have any in stock.

NOT acrylic but super-flat.....Humbrol Matt Cote. There's nothing flatter on the planet than this stuff. Thin with high quality lacquer thinner, shake it, shake it, shake it, then spray a few mist coats and you've got it.

Peace,

Gunze flat is great - although it has to be stirred thoroughly and sprayed in light misting coats .... otherwise you get the white talc spots, a problem which i had until recently. Thank to ARC threads that issue got sorted :)

Isn't that the secret with all clear flat coats? At least judging from my many failed attempts to get a good, even flat clear coat.

Cheers

I bought some Liquitex Matte Varnish (an acrylic) because I had a 40% off coupon, only to find out it's more of a satin/semi-gloss finish. It was brushed on so the layer is probably thicker than what you'd get with an airbrush, but I really don't think a thinner coat would make a difference.
