gaz262
Some reviewers have stated that the plastic 20mm cannon barrels on the 'C' wing in the big Tamiya Spit kits are wrong for late model Spitfires..... What exactly is wrong with them? I was planning on getting some of the excellent brass turned barrels from Master Model of Poland but just thought I'd ask you guys before parting with the old hard-earned! Cheers Gaz Edited May 12, 2011 by gaz262
Edgar
There's nothing wrong with them for wings with "C" armament; on the XVI, which had "E" armament, the cannons were moved out, and back, which shortened the fairings. On the 24, the cannon were Mk.V Hispanos, which had a shorter barrel, and therefore shorter fairings, but these were never fitted to WWII Spitfires. Edgar

Edgar Thanks Edgar (to the rescue again!) - the XVIe cannon barrels appeared to be smoother and had a more rounded kinda curve to the fairings where the 'C' wing barrels look much more angular. Where does this criticism of Tamiyas depiction come from then? Gaz

Where does this criticism of Tamiyas depiction come from then? I haven't read them, so don't know, for sure, but there's a saying, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." At some time, someone must have fitted Mk.V Hispanos into a IX, since Paul Monforton found some, when he was doing his huge book on the IX/XVI. There were plans to fit them into the VIII, but it never happened. The biggest problem was that the guns were electrically fired, and needed 24 volt systems (until the 24, the Spitfire was basically 12 volt.) When the "E" wing was first trialled, they hit trouble with the cannon fairings, since the sideways blast, from the .5", collapsed the cannon fairings, so they had to be modified/strengthened.
