f-16 sparrow $ sidewinders

Recommended Posts

The missiles started out white with appropriate bands but in the mid late eighties they were painted gray to match the airframe.if you're doing a current a/c I'd use grey. The colored bands refer to live/ inert missiles. The brown band is for the motor and a yellow band with that designates a live warhead.A dummy missile would have both bands blue.

The gray is FS36375 and on Sparrow and AMRAAM missiles, the nose cone(radome) is white. Al the colors are flat finish. As for the bands, there are colors on the diffrent sections. Warhead section is Yellow (for live warhead), Guidance and motor sections have a dark brown band.

There was a thread in general discussion titled "practice sidewinders" that may explain more.

From what time frame is your model's prototype? If it's before about 1980 the missiles should be white. If it's after 1990 they should probably be gray. If it's in between it may be either. Active duty will have gotten the gray ones sooner, especially deployed units; Guard and Reserve may have had the white ones for a while longer. We had a few white AIM-9s in the VT Guard up until '90 or so.
