robw_uk
place holder for my next build... the old EA-6B from Hasegawa.... going top open a few panels and add a but more detail to the cockpit... exact extent of the scratch will be seen once I start working onm this in earnest but thinking 1) one of the 2 avionics bays (maybe both) 2) one of the 2 bays behind the cockpit (maybe both) 3) the APSU on the port wing root 4) cockpit 5) underside drop down electronics bay 6) wheel wells 7) arrester hook & chaff/flare housings - left open on the kit extras I am contemplating 1) wing-fold access hatch (ie not folding the wings but there is a maintenance hatch that can be opened with the wings out - anyone got any decent photos of this - the one I have shows there is a hatch opened but not how the inside looks (guess I could build the whole wing-fold mechanism and trhen clsoe the wing and see whats there) 2) radar 3) power hatch on starboard side (next to ladder) 4) flaps 5) air-brakes on wing tips (more likely than number 4) anyway.... like I said, its all in my head at the moment but will start this week - photos of box & sprues to follow Edited October 14, 2011 by robw_uk

robw_uk
photos.... usual suspects plus some with words on to show what I am thinking.... starting with the seats and cockpit - will see what that comes out like (may opt for resin seats @ &2 a pop if it fails too badly)
robw_uk
started work on seat number 1... not 100% accurate but it looks less generic than it did to start with. first 2 photos compare in-box with my adaptations last photo compares my adaptations with the Tomcat GRU 7 seat (willc orrect the overhead handle to match the GRU7EA version but apparently the rest is OK (and in 1/72 you wont notice anyway ;-)) anyway - there is still a lot to do to tidy it up, add wiring etc but it is a start
robw_uk
first attempt with the seat (it is 1cm deep, 6mm wide - so macro lens shows stuff you cant see with the naked eye ;-) 0 thats my excuse and am sticking to it)..... things i like 1) wiring, neat, held in place with a metal plate (thats what it looks like on the photos anyway) 2) head rest - little bit of plasti-card detail, a small hint of the material element behind the head rest (will be painted to stand out of course) 3) seats - while untidy at least they have a pattern to match the original what i dont like 1) non-wired side.... may have to look at adding a little detail on it 2) the seat - while it has a pattern to match the original it is untidy to do 1) something on the non-wired side 2) ejector handle in head rest 3) seatbelts & that sort of stuff 4) make 3 more of the blasted things what i have noticed working on this - the cockpit tub..... doesnt look much like the real thing (but there is an extra piece to go on to divide front & rear 'pit so will reserve final judgement til i start playing with that..... needless to say will turn my attention to this once the seats are done.... HOLMES
rob, I think you are doing good and stick at it... following with inetrest.
robw_uk
cheers Holmes... moving on to 2nd seat (and maybe 3rd & 4th if i do them in parallel) over the weekend... then will tackle that pesky tub
robw_uk
first seat construction done (as well as I will manage).... as this is the prototype its a little rough - rest are neater (and progressing slowly).... not a lot to see as it is all grey/white - hopefully it will look better when painted
robw_uk
four seats done & dusted - now just need to paint 'em.... looking at the cockpit tub and comparing it to the Kinetic 1:48th I dont think I can do much with the base... will look at the rear bulhead and the two I/P (provided as decals but maybe I can put some bumps on instead (perhaps over the top of the decal???) started on the Garret aux. power fan housing now for a bit of variety... panel cut and need to thin the underside wing half to make "room" for the fan (wont be quite deep enough) which will be kindly donated from one of the underwing pods which wont be used (not sure if I will put anything under the wings as the "bird" is being maintained quite heavily...... so seat photos, and one in-situ shot of all 4 in the cockpit tub
robw_uk
morning guys.... just a small update showing a part-painted seat (plus ruler) so you can see how I am progressing... also started to see what I can do with the tup - bit of hacking to make it more "spacious" (the behind the front-seat area is just a block where it should be less blocky and have some wires - you can just see it in the closed-up kit so going to do some work on it.......) Tripio
Hi Rob, good job on the seats. How did you get this kit?I've never seen before this box art from Hasegawa. Very cool. Keep us updated.More frequently, please. Regards,Laz
Anders_Isaksson
Interesting project, looking forward to see more. Am I correct that the panel lines on this one are all recessed? Seemed to remember that Hasegawa's Prowler feature raised panel lines but I may have confused their Prowler and Intruder kits.
robw_uk
am at work now but off the top of my head I think they are all recessed (the one I have cut out on the wing definately is...... as are the access panels on the cockpit outsides (also being cut)... seems to be some panels missing - 2 behind the cockpit above the wing and the air brake - does anyone know if these are later additions to the airframe or standard on all versions (will have to check my refs at home of course)

Keep us updated.More frequently, please. Regards,Laz thanks for the compliment - very happy with the way they have painted up but does mean i have to attack the tup - the basic one just isnt good enough (eeeeeeeeeeK)..... I got this one from ebay last year - I believe it is the first production edition (or a very early one at least) but not sure on copyright date... must say the quality of the moulding is very good - pity it is me building it really ;-)
VA-115EFR
Great job so far!!! All that detail in 1:72 scale, I commend you for I sure wouldn't have the skill nor patience! Keep up the great work!
robw_uk
Great job so far!!! All that detail in 1:72 scale, I commend you for I sure wouldn't have the skill nor patience! Keep up the great work! I find cockpits therapuetic (mostly as, on the whole, a lot of the detail while there, cannot really be seen so as long as there is an impression of detail it is enough.... have also set myself a couple of electonics bays to do - a first for me - but obviously more visible than the cockpit detail..... anyway, for today no photo update - started hacking the ccokpit tub 1) have removed the bits to the side of the vertical (ish) piece that is behind the pilots chair and moved them back about 1.5mm. This will give me a small gap to add some wiring into there (as seen on some AM parts). 2) Also building up the next bulkhead so that it runs flush with the vertical(ish) piece behind the navigator(?) seat - again sort of seen in other kits etc). this will have wiring on the face 3) will add a horizontal piece to take the raised vertical(ish) piece in to the bulkhead between front & rear cockpits.... this is nowhere near 100% accurate but when wired up should give a better impression vs the original... anyway the next few updates will be verbal probably - not brave enough to post interim photos so you will have to wait for the final

robw_uk
Thanks, that sounds good. Suddenly I got a lot more interested in getting this kit for myself. Looks like eBay is the way to go... i i could find it for the right price I would've gone for the Itlaeri (I think - it might;ve been Fujimi) kit as it comes with the ability to wingfold.... not sure on the fit/detail on the rest of that kit but that would;ve been nice to have (I could get AM wingfold or scratchbuild - not sure if I will yet)
HOLMES
Rob Good work on the second seat et al..
robw_uk
cheers as always Holmes.... slowly getting the tub ocked into a little bit better shape.... and still need to pu a little detail painting on the seats, but that will wait for the pit to be done so that it isnt too damaged test fitting everything!!!! robw_uk
slow going... for some reason the curved bulkhead position seems to be too far away form where the seat is, however it is perfectly positioned for the fuselage... so leaving as is... it may get thinned down a little more back to front and needs to be sanded more (as do other areas). finally managed to remove quarter circles in the bulkhead - seems to be a concensus with AM versions that that is appropriate... next up obviosuly the sanding but also wiring and a bit more building - going to put in a horizontal piece to take the whitce card behind the seats back to join the curved bulkhead (and add side pieces0 and then build up a center console that seems to exist - again its going to be longer (back to front) than in reality but that seems to be how Hase have built the cockpit...... robw_uk
watch out - 2 updates WITH PHOTOS in one day.... shocking.... well got a bit more done... bit of 'pit plumbing, the horizontal bar in the bulkhead, and, erm... something that seems to go from the bulkhead to the pilot seat - no other seats have this - anyone know what it is? so photos...
