DutyCat
I have a public domain DVD that I would like to upload and link to my website. I would like to know if it has to be converted to an "internet friendly" format before uploading. Also, there is something I downloaded (Ready on Arrival...again old DOD public domain) that I would like to copy to a DVD and show it to my aviation students. I suppose I will have to buy some software in order to do this. Any suggestions?
DutyCat
Thanks Holmes, but no one knows or is interested. I'll figure it out.
Mark M.
You can't just upload a video DVD. The files on a DVD are raw data meant to be played on a drive, not meant to be played in viewers. Often most video viewer programs (i.e. real player, MS media player, etc) cannot play these files. On top of that they are HUGE in size and will eat your bandwidth very quickly. You will need to digitize the DVD file and downsize it as well as re-compress it so that the quality is passable but the file size is a mere fraction of what you have. There's a bit of effort involved in such a task, if I understand what you are describing. Edited June 9, 2011 by Mark M.
Mark M.
Oh, sorry, that was only half the question. To answer the second half, you can burn video footage to a DVD, yes. Generally speaking it requires some software to do it for you. I believe there are some out there that may do this. It's more common to be able to burn footage to a DVD than it is to rip from a DVD (due to all the security issues and concerns). Or you can just burn the video file as a data DVD, and have them pop it in a computer to view. Might be the easier method, though it's not foolproof (depends if they're tech savvy enough to have an up to date media player, etc)
taylorde
There are lots of free software to rip a DVD to AVI format, I did it once but forgot what I used http://www.wikihow.com/Rip-a-DVD-to-an-AVI-or-MPG-File-Using-DVDx DaveT
Mark M.
I've become warry of some of those supposed free programs. Some have spyware and malware embedded in them. The problem is over the years I have tried many and can't recall which were nasty buggers and which were totally safe.
Fustercluck
To convert almost any video format to dvd, the best program I know is Devede. It's free, safe and works great. It makes an iso file that you can burn to a dvd. Scroll down to the comments and about seven down is a download link. http://www.majorsilence.com/devede The best program to convert anything to anything else is Super! It is also free and safe, it may be more than you need, but is a handy program to have. Scroll down to the download link. http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html To burn things to cd or dvd use Ashampoo burning studio. http://download.cnet.com/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-Free/3000-2646_4-10776287.html You will have to check with your host for what video format you need to post online. That should cover it.

Using Devede, I selected a flv file and tried to proceed, but my computer is telling me I need permissions? What am I doing wrong? I am the administrator on this computer. Mark M.
Were you running the program as the administrator? Try right clicking the shortcut and say "run as administrator" and see if that helps?
