Well, just made it past Antwerp, Belgium, before the car broke down. Little guy in tears because he'd been looking forward to this trip since coming home from last year's RIAT! :crying2: Fortunately, things went pretty fast after I made the 'distress call', and my son, myself and the car were brought home at midnight, only 2,5 hours after breaking down.

In a few moments will try to rebook the ferry, so we can load up our second (much smaller, slower and less comfortable) car for the journey. Hopefully it will work out so the little guy will have a smile on his face again!

Am sitting here in Glos @ 2.30 p.m. (3/4 hour away from Fairford) watching the sun outside, hoping those there are getting some now, too. Bailed out at 10.30 a.m. as, basically it was torrential then, had been for an hour or so and had crossed the line for me between fun and misery. Saw some interesting aircraft, some of the pics aren't blurred by rain, got a couple of models I was after as well. Felt great sympathy for the pilots, vistors and model/book vendors (AKA the rain refuge managers.)

I went today (Saturday) - torrential rain all morning - got soaked on my lower half/backs of legs.

Sheltered in a model tent for a while - met up with Guy Holroyd (Mr Linden Hill).

At 11:45 - exactly as forecast - rain stopped, then sun came out - great afternoon.

Got to sit in the Ukrainian Su-27UB - and into the cockpit of the Il-76.

Great afternoon in the sun - now have a bad back and sore feet - but am very happy.

Pics to follow....

A big thank you to the Royal Jordanian Airforce for keeping their tent open and letting us take shelter there. And a big thanks for the free t-shirts me and Balerman received.

Yes it was wet, but in the end, us bringing the"canned sunshine" from back home worked.

Hey guys,

Just got back from a weekend away in Gloucestershire.

Did any flying take place?

We endured the pouring rain from 7:30 when we got in until 10:45 by which time we were soaked through to the skin. :(

My 9yr old nephew was at the end of his tether so when the Belgian F-16 taxiied down the runway and back again we called it a day and left.

I feel sorry for the organisers of RIAT. That's often the trouble with planning an outdoor event here in the UK.

I hope everyone else that attended managed to enjoy the statics and whatever flying took place.

*Edit. N/m...I found a neat thread on another forum with photos of the flying so that answers my question.

The RAF's largest aircraft - the Airbus A-330 'Voyager' was on display in the static, so I took of few pics of it.....

vyager_01.jpg

I was intrigued by the double row of 'slime lights' on the fuselage and elsewhere.

I understand that the pale buff coloured ones are low-intensity station-keeping lights - but the black ones ???

vyager_02.jpg

As there was no-one around the Voyager at the time, I asked the Typhoon pilot next door if he knew what they were? - he wondered if they were infra-red station keeping lights - for NVG.

He explained that on his Typhoon he could dial up the intensity of the buff-coloured strips.

Later in the day - when there was someone around the Voyager to ask - I was told that it was 'probably some test equipment' :woot.gif:

I am now expecting a midnight knock on the door..........

Vairy eeeeeeenteresting......

Ken

PS - The New Russian Su-35S and PAK-FA have similar black 'slime lights'

Hi All,

I went with 2 friends. We arrived at the camping site at 3.30, because so early we waited and did some sleeping in the car. when people woke up we started to built our camp/tents. Because of rain we did some sleeping (drived whole night) and at 12.00 we walked to a site outsite the airbase to photoshoot the flying birds. They realy came near, great shooting. Sunday i went to the display alone (friends went back to the great site outside for more shooting instead of using there tickets). But i wanted to see the Ukrainian birds upclose. They were great. And yes Ken, they sit gooooooood.

Monday we went to the "Park-and-View" by the strip, to photograph the birds leaving. At 15.00 we left Fairford and drove back to the Netherlands.

Great weekend!!!!!!!!!!

Ken, Joachim, Great Pics ...

Ken, I'd bet good money the Typhoon Driver was right and those are most likely formation strips for NVG ...

Thanks for sharing, Gents ...
