pappychksix
Designed to be a fighter-bomber version of the classic Sabre, the F-86H was the right aircraft at the wrong time. Powered by the General Electric J-73, offering a 51% improvement in power over the more common J-47-GE-27 used in the F-86F, this aircraft would compete with North Americans newest creation at the time, the F-100. Serving for a short time in front line service with the United States Air Force, it was soon to be passed to the Air National Guard where it would serve into the 1970's. A shortage of engines (there were only 473 units made)made for maintenance nightmares but the crew chiefs and mechanics continued to keep these fighters airborne. Eventually, surviving aircraft would be target drones, scrapped or used as Gate Guards. Here are a few of those aircraft. pappychksix
Thanks guys....Trying to find F-86H pics was VERY difficult. Trying to find them in color was almost impossible. But, After 4 months, I finally have a pretty good representation of the "Sabre Hog"....Pete
pappychksix
F-86H-1-NH 52-2044 from the 167th F.I.S. (Green Flight) of the West Virginia ANG based at Martinsburg, 1958. The aircraft is one of the only "H" model Sabres with illustrated nose art, in this case, "Howdy Doody" and was flown by 1Lt Al R. Ogden. NeilF92
Quite a selection Pete - I think you might even have excelled the legendary Clave in the number of different schemes for one a/c!

WouldHaveBeenaPilot
pappychksix - I recently visited the Howdy Doody in it's current location. According to my research, she was reassembled after being (almost) scrapped, and now sits in front of the Warren County, VA airport in Front Royal, VA. https://picasaweb.google.com/107735441162393980852/TheHowdyDoody#5658236425674172210 Reply if you'd like more photos. The one I found was a small picture that had been taken from quite a distance and with that I made the AC profile. There was also a bigger picture of the "nose art" when the aircraft was lying in a state of disrepair and some one had shot three holes through "Howdy Doody's Face. Again, thanks for the story and the pics...Pete http://www.pictorialhistoriespublishing.com/images/Mountaineer-Sabers.jpg Edited October 27, 2011 by pappychksix
