janman
Thanks, guys! One of my favorite planes as well, so I'm trying to make this look as good as possible. The tail gun. Over-detailing on the blast shields on both sides of the turret was removed and the gun itself was located off from the center. Some internal details were scratched from styrene and the barrels were completely re-done by using broken drill bits and foil tape. The original part can be seen below the turret. dragan_mig31
My friend you've done an outstanding job.I love the gun.Where can one buy that foil?
janman
The aluminum foil tape is probably sold in most hardware stores, although I "found" mine from a construction site.
janman
The landing gears are now detailed with various hydraulic lines. Also, the very prominent hinge between the first and the second pair of wheels was added. I didn't want to risk the strength of the gears so I just added hinge-like details on the surface of the main gear struts. Photos before and after. I've also glued the fuselage halves. The fit was rather good, although the separate parts with the suction relief doors needed thin strips of styrene for better fit. The intakes and the front fuselage are not joined with the main fuselage yet. I was just dry-fitting them to see how to best assemble this beast. (Whether to follow the instructions or not, especially when it comes to attaching the intakes. In theory, one might achieve a perfect joint more easily if the the intakes came next, separate from the front fuselage.)
Raymond
verry nice! dont forget to read clancys "red storm rising" ;)

janman
ray: +1!!! jan, seeing that fuselage looks like a sci-fi beast of some sort. found a shelf space yet? Thanks, guys! Shelf space? Actually, no. I really can't say where I'm going to put this thing when its finished. Gotta take a trip to IKEA, I guess. Hmm... The Clancy book suddenly got a hold on me! :D
EagleAviation
Nice work on the landing gear! Excellent!

arnobiz
Great work Jan, nice scratchbuilding and an excellent subject. How big is this monster in 1/72?? Arnaud
janman
Thanks, fellas! How big? Big enough, especially with wings at the maximum sweep. I'll try to post a pic when I resume work with the fuselage. Meanwhile I've been painting the Neomega resin pit. I was going to paint it with Akan's Russian cockpit colour but unfortunately it still hasn't arrived so I had to do my own mix. Also the resin seats are almost finished apart from some smaller details, the back of the seat being the most unfinished area at the moment. It will be interesting to see how everything fits inside the kit front fuselage. All the resin parts fit fine, although the seats will probably need some trimming from the undersides. dragan_mig31
I like the cockpit a lot.
janman
Janne, Mario and Dragan, thanks for the comments. I too think the colour looks pretty good. As probably can be seen, the cockpit is being test-fitted as well and with some sanding it suits in just nicely. With the seats installed it will be much more cramped though. Some of the very nice side details and especially a mm or two from the bottom have to be shaved off. Here's for you, Arnaud! As I said, the model is big, but naturally there are bigger 1/72 models than this one. Guys who prefer US stuff can compare it with a 1/72 F-4 and the Ruskie-lovers can do the same with the help of a 1/72 MiG-21bis. :) EDIT: Dang. Should've dug my Trumpeter Badger to see which one's actually bigger. Maybe later. Edited September 24, 2011 by janman
Berkut
Cockpit looks great indeed. Just a few things if i may: It seems the paint on the headrest is a bit thin, thus making the gray shinning through. And maybe some touch up here and there. Hey, you made me remaking afterburner rings on Su-24, this is the least i can do.

Hey, you made me remaking afterburner rings on Su-24, this is the least i can do. Ah, gotcha! :D Honestly speaking, neither the seats nor the cockpit are ready yet. As I said about the seats, most of the detail painting is still undone. What comes to the headrests, they are supposed to be gray - originally. I've added a thin layer of brownish gray on top of that to make them look dirty. Something like for example here: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/cergant010/view/94224?page=0 At the moment some of the headrests look a bit too brown and dirty to be originally gray, so I'll probably do something about that. So, good points anyhow!
Pilatus
Great job on this huge bird! Cockpit is impressive!!!!
janman
Great job on this huge bird! Cockpit is impressive!!!! Thank you, Pilatus. The cockpit will soon be installed inside the front fuselage halves. I've done some dry-fitting and it seems some further sanding is needed on the cockpit sides. I've already worked with the bulkheads and they should now fit inside the fuselage. Seems my pit lacks some parts (especially the lower part of the rear mid console) so I had to fabricate some details out of scratch. These include for instance the two radio-like devices between the rear seats and the cover that hides part of the instruments from the curious civilians.
janman
The exhaust nozzles look rather good - from the outside. I added some engraved details to the outer surface and painted them with Tamiya rattle can silver. This is just a base for further detail painting. The interior needed much more work. There were no petal detailing inside the nozzles (like there is on the outer surface of the nozzles), so these were engraved. Another set of petals was made from a strip of thin sheet styrene with engraved details that was rolled and glued inside the nozzles. The corrugated paneling farther inside the exhausts was made from foil tape. The kit also includes nicely made compressor faces which will further benefit from the after market PE burner rings. ChernayaAkula
Awesome work so far! <...> <...> Look at the size of that thing! You could hang an AS-4 under one and the Fished under the other wing as a parasite escort fighter. Edited October 20, 2011 by ChernayaAkula

Jon Fitzgerald
Ken, that photo is EPIC! Would be great to have a TU-22M in 1/48 :)
janman
Nah !! - the Tu-22M is tiny.......... Great work so far Janman Ken Thanks a lot, Ken... <_< Just joking! :D I was dreaming about building a Bear and a Blackjack one day but this photo (even though I remember seeing it previously) ruined my dream. There's no way I could find a place for a model with a wingspan of Tu-95 or 160. Those things are HUGE! I have said it before but your collection is something very spectacular - and something I'm jealous of.
