Modelmkr
I am THOROUGHLY confused  Did Ilfrey's P-51D HJGB ever wear the codes MC*O (his P-38 codes) or did his P-51D-5NA, 44-13761 always (and only) have codes MC*I? I keep getting conflicting info on this. I have on the way, Cutting Edge's 1/32 sheet for my Tamiya Mustang, but I am not sure that this aircraft ever wore the MC*O codes as shown on the sheet and other sources I've read state that the 20th FG Mustangs had invasion stripes painted on them immediately when they arrived in theatre. None of this rings true on the CE sheet, so which is it? Also, did HJGB initially have a filetless tail and then later get a field mod to add this? There seems to be a lot of contradictory information on the web and my Mustang references aren't that extensive so I'm hoping someone here can answer these two questions. Thanks. Koen L
It wore MC-I at least at some point as you can see in this file: http://warbirds-eaa.org/featured/4Featured%20Articles%20-%20Vol.32,%20No.%2006-%20September%202009%20Lessons%20Learned-%20Happy%20Jack%27s.pdf In one of the pictures you can just make out the 'I' on the tail. I do see the markings on the nose changed quite a bit and I have no idea which of the two styles is on the CE sheet. Hope it helps though. Koen

I do know HJGB had the MC*I codes, that is not in dispute. What I wanted to know is if it ever wore MC*O codes, ie: photographic evidence of such. The markings on the sheet are the very early style. See here Thanks. Edited August 7, 2011 by Modelmkr
AX 365
Modelmkr: While certainly not an exhaustive authority, I did find this little bit of info on the Little Friends website... http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/search.php?searchString=ilfrey&Submit=Search http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php?Group=20&Style=item&origStyle=list&Item=48&Temp=1014&searchString= http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php?Group=20&Style=item&origStyle=list&Item=50&Temp=1024&searchString= Nothing to indicate that his Mustang wore MC*O Mike

Koen L
Sorry, I misinterpreted your post. Maybe someone on Hyperscale knows? They've been talking about nothing but Mustangs lately!
