Zactoman
The Su-25 almost always carries an outer pylon which is very often equipped with the APU-60-1 Aphid launch rail: My question is whether it can also carry the APU-60-2 dual Aphid launch rail? I have seen pictures of one equipped with the dual rails loaded with Aphids but this was located at an air museum. In searching for pics of operational aircraft I haven't found anything... mario krijan
I didn't saw on any Su-25 dual launchers :-)
Zactoman
Looking around a bit more I found this description for the Armory 1/72 Aphids and dual launch rails: R-60 (AA-8 "Aphid") Air to Air short range guided missile (IR guidance) + APU-60-II paired pylon(for MiG-21bis, MiG-23ML, MiG-25PD, MiG-27, MiG-29, MiG-31, Su-15, Su-17/-17M3/M4, Su-24M/MR, Su-25, Yak-28PM, Yak-38) http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=211025&view=findpost&p=2207114Maybe they know something more? ya-gabor
Zactoman Do not trust what you see in museums. In one of our museums at Kecel they have hung everything that they had, with no respect to "operational reality". The R-60 on the Su-25 was only for selfdefence and it was not a fighter interceptor. :) Seriously. In its ground attack role the outer stations only pose extraweight that they have to take with them. Even though the R-60 is the smallest AtoA misslie around and its weight not so great, a quartet of them and the extra double launcher will limit the aircrafts effectivnes, i.e. the number and type of real air to ground amo that it can take into air. Still I think it would be possible to add the double launcher although I dont know what extra wiring in the system would be needed for this. I would expect that the weapon system would need some extra wiring for the double launcher! You would need to ask the Sukhoy people on this. B) Now that we speak of it, I remember a few posts above seeing a double launcher on the wing of a Su-25, only the colours were a bit strange! :D :D :D Best regards Gabor
maXar
Zactoman, I agree with ya-gabor that do not trust the appearance of the aircraft at the air museum. <_< Very often employees of the museum operates on the principle "that would be beautiful." And at the same time in addition to military equipment uses their broad imagination, plywood, cardboard, scissors and glue... :D Now there appears a lack of professionalism, as in all other branches of my country... Perhaps there is a theoretical possibility of using pylons APU-60-II on the Su-25, but the practical use of this option configuration of weapons is extremely unlikely. It is known that the pylons APU-60-II were used on fighters and fighter-bombers MiG-21, -23, -27 and Su-17, -22 and even on the interceptors MiG-25 and -31. This is supported by numerous photos of real aircrafts. Edited August 15, 2011 by maXar
Zactoman
Thanks for the replies. Yes, I am very aware that air museum displays can in fact be very wrong, but I was hoping. It sure would look cool seeing an Su-25 loaded up with four Aphids! Oh well...
ya-gabor
Hi Zactoman, Yes, a lot of things would look cool on the wing of the Su-25 and of many other aircraft, but they dont belong there! Some of the museum people also think that it would be cool to see something on the aircraftthat they have in storage so they use their artistic freedom in hanging them up. Looks cool but has no relation of any sort to real service possibilities! Still a lot of modellers use their artistic vein and produce some hair raising things, as a judge it is interesting to see some very strange combinations at international competitions! Best regards Gabor
geedubelyer
Perhaps the modeller could depict a museum bird? That way, your beautiful dual rail launchers could be incorporated.
dragan_mig31
I have spoken to several su-25 pilots and ground crew and they told me that the su-25 can not carry dual r-60 rails. However I have no idea if there ware any testings in Russia ord the USSR.
Zactoman
Still a lot of modellers use their artistic vein and produce some hair raising things Perhaps the modeller could depict a museum bird?What-ifs, museum birds, I don't care so long as the customers buy them :P I have spoken to several su-25 pilots and ground crew and they told me that the su-25 can not carry dual r-60 rails. However I have no idea if there ware any testings in Russia ord the USSR.I have doubts that the Su-25 is even capable of carrying that much extra weight on its outboard pylons.Oh well, there are lots of 1/32 MiG-21 and MiG-23 kits that can use them as well as the upcoming MiG-27 (and hopefully some day an Su-17, Su-22, MiG-25 or 31!). The instructions are finished and the "buy now" buttons should be up on my website later today!
maXar
Zactoman, In any case, the installed under the wing of rail APU-60-II with two missiles R-60 look very impressive! This part is fairly universal, and of course it will be good demand. And do not forget that there is a rail APU-60-III (P-62-3) - to install 3 of R-60! .. ;) Edited August 18, 2011 by maXar

utley
Didnt the early Mig-29 9-12 carry a dual R-60 launcher? I recall seeing something like that somewhere...
