vivkulan
Dear All, I am new to airiner builds and I have built 2 airliners so far and both of them are OOB. 1/144 Zvezda IL-86 and Minicraft 777-200. Every now and then I see some superb builds of airliners in this forum in which the modeller choose to have the flaps and slats deployed. Looking at these, I really want ot do this in my next model. (Which could be any thing from the following list A380, A340, An-124, 747-400 ). So my questions are 1.How can I educate myself in the wing component positions for takeoff and landing ? Should I look at lots of pics in airliners.net or is there is any basic aerodynamic schematic which can be applied for all the aircraft? 2.Secondly , how do i go about duplidating the wing components in my build if that option is not part of the kit. Should I buy different thickness styrene sheets and cut according to dimensions and reference pics? I am as clear as mud in this subject . All the airliner gurus out there , can you please enlignten me? I posted the same questions in britmodeller.com as well. Will greatly appreciate any help. Thanks and Regards Vivek K
CUPRAR
Hi Vivek, if I was you I'd follow kevins advice on britmodeller. He is always letting his flaps out on his builds.... Chris

Fly-n-hi
The flap position changes depending on whether we are taking off or landing. On the 737 we are at "flaps 1" or sometimes "flaps 5" for take-off. For landing we normally use "flaps 30" and sometimes "flaps 40" for shorter runways and contaminated runways. The difference to the naked eye is that during take-off the trailing edge flaps are down only a little ways and the leading edge slats are extended to roughly 50% or their travel. On landing the trailing edge flaps are extended fully and so are the leading edge slats. The 747 has leading edge kruger flaps which swing open from the bottom as does the 737 and 727 on the inner panels so pay close attention to their locations. I'd say that your best bet is to decide which phase of flight you want your model to be in and then look at pics on airliners.net to figure out how to cut out your flaps. Hope this helped. CUPRAR
Have you ever done it ? I was thinking about it but not got the guts to cut the wings up lol, even tho I cut up a fuselage with no problem
johnny_7713
There is no set aerodynamic rule for the flap settings, other than that a higher setting (larger angle / greater extension) is used for landing than for take-off. The exact settings will differ per aircraft type and even per landing (e.g. more flaps might be used if the plane is heavier or the runway is shorter). Your best bet is indeed probably airliners.net, but another area you could have a look at is the flight-simulator community. Avid flight-simmers often have check-lists for the aircraft they fly that will include flap settings, so you might find some information there. Of course you will still need to do research to find out what a setting of say 'flaps 30' actually looks like, since flap designs also vary per aircraft.
carioca
If I'm not wrong, Contrails has a conversion set for flapped down 737NG wings to fit the Revell AG kit. Question: Am I wrong? If you're into building a 737NG, it's your chance. There are many modelers around here who flap down their models, some - like Frank "The Oldhooker" - even have written "how to" threads on the subject. But that was a while ago, it should be a little hard to find. I'll see what I have saved on my computer. Regards Eduardo
richellis
The best place for an How to is on the |Airliner Cafe, Look It covers the classic 737s, but you can use the tips on anything. Im having a go at flaps, I started with somthing simple, The Airfix trident and Ill pop some pics below. To start, sit down with the kit and the computer and look at pictures of the airliners wings, and start to mark in pencil where you think you need to cut, and what yo need to make and add. some of a Minicraft 737 following the link above,

I had to take a break from modeling, mostly to concentrate on the prosecution of the patent application for the mirror displays. (which was successful and is now Issued Patent #8021238!!)
