F-14A in 1:32 Scale

Recommended Posts

Here's the final result of my Trumpeter F-14A. The following changes/addtions were made.

  • Fixed the intakes by reworking the kit parts.
  • Added the Aries cockpit
  • Added some Eduards PE for various grills and vents
  • Add a lot of addtional scratch built items to the gear bays.
  • Custom decals for the AIM-54's.

All in all it was more or less a fun build. It's no Academy F-18 to be sure, but still a good kit. The intakes were dissapointing, as was the lack of good detail in the gear bays. The cockpit is good for a kit but still not as good as an AM resin pit.

Hi there.

No, I've not yet found a replacement. But you have to look at it on just the right angle to see the crack. And I see it because I know it's there and I know where to look. When (if) I get a new one, I'll replace it. In the mean time, I'll just face that side towards the wall or something.

Welcome Jolly Roger Scheme :)

Great build, clean and efective, you said

"•Fixed the intakes by reworking the kit parts.

•Added the Aries cockpit

•Added some Eduards PE for various grills and vents

•Add a lot of addtional scratch built items to the gear bays.

•Custom decals for the AIM-54's."

So, you wanted to return realism of aircraft, but you has not painted in duraluminum slots and bottom edges jetintake.

Best regards.

Przemek.

As I said, the forward part of the intake ramp is painted. Look at the second photo in the first post.

The leading edge of the wings are not painted because;

A. the reference material I used had them gull grey.

B. the instructions don't call for it either.

Yes, some iterations of the paint scheme had bare metal leading edges. It seems others did not. The aircraft you have referenced there doesn't even have the same camo pattern I used. I see about a dozen differences in that photo.

I now, but in 1976r scheme Jolly Roger camuflage two colour top and bottom and edge of the wings not painted camuflage (colour duraluminum)- It was stationed on USS NIMITZ, next It was stationed on USS Theodore Rooswelt and here camuflage is one colour top and bottom, and edge of the wings have colour camuflage.

So, Really, model looks great, I congratulate.

I like Jolly Roger Paint scheme.

So i will Build F-14 VF-84 Desert Storm White/Black scheme and VF-103 Yellow Black scheme with Lantrin.

According to the information in the kit, my paint job is from 1989 not '76. Regardless, this was intended to be a simple diversion from my regular Canadian bird build so the research I've done is satisfactory for my interests.

So..after humming and ahhing.. and looking at more reference materials.. and against my better judgement, I added the metal leading edges. With lacquer paint it only takes a few minutes.

With the hard wood floor, it looks like it's resting on some sort of WWII carrier deck.

Anyway, just so people don't think I'm completely off my rocker, the instructions in the trumpter kit clearly mark this paint job as 1989 and don't show any indication of the metal leading edges on the wings. But, as trumpeter also got the instructions for the intake assembly all wrong, (and they packaged their Canadian Tribial class warship as 'HMS' Huron), they've proven that they mess things up pretty often. Also note where they have the white for the flaps et al on the wings. I couldn't find a single photo of the paint on the wing flaps like they have shown here.

Not your doing, but the instruction sheet is WAYYYYY off. By 1989, F-14's were painted in the TPS scheme. Gull Gray over white was long gone. You're paint scheme is from before 1978. By 1978, VF-84 was transitioning to the overall Gull Gray scheme. They started by painting all upper surfaces Gull Gray, which is what they looked like in the Final Countdown. By around 1980, they had gotten rid of all the white undersurfaces. So, the instruction sheet is messed up. There's no way you could have known that, though. Nicely done. The only thing I'd recommend is to paint the engine area just in front of the nozzles. It should be a metalic, almost dark copper color.

Thanks.

The area just in front of the exhaust is painted steel, then burnt metal, then various blacks, greys, and metals.

Sort of modeled after this image;

Nice job RiderFan ! :clap2:

Victory 200 looks quite sharp ...

I think this is most representative of a 1977 scheme ...

It's a beautiful Tomcat and I bet it looks Fantastic on the shelf ... :thumbsup2:

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with it. I think it's a pretty accurate build all things considered... especially given it's not my normal fair. I'm quite happy with the landing gear.

I bet it looks Fantastic on the shelf ...

I've had to find a bigger shelf!! This is a big one...

thanks

David

First, you did a great job. Second, your bird does in fact represent the VF-84 scheme as it would have appeared in '76 or '77. After '78 the upper surfaces of the wings and the horizontal stabs were not painted white. The birds in The Final Countdown had the grey upper surfaces.

This paint scheme...with the white upper surfaces...looks way better in my humble opinion.
