Skunkworks 1/48 MQ-9 Reaper 39 Sqn RAF

Recommended Posts

Just got this one finished (with some very gracious help from EDWMatt). A lovely kit I've added a little basic scratch building to. I detailed the sensor turret, added brake discs and calipers to the main wheels. I also made a new torque link to replace the clunky one-piece moulded affair on the nose leg. I roughed out some chocks for the wheels too. Short build thread here.

I made some FOD covers for the intake and exhaust and some protection for the pitot tubes. I also drilled out holes for the pilot's view ports in the nose near the main pitot tube and glazed them with some small discs made using a micro punch and die set (worth it's weight in gold for this build as I also used it for the turrent sensor glazing.)

The main colours are done with Xtracolour, and markings are from Caracal decals excellent sheet.

If anyone else is considering this, the propellor is represented incorrectly, and I separated the blades and changed the incidence as a basic fix. (If the real vehicle had Skunkworks' prop' fitted it would accelerate rapidly in a direction exactly opposite to that intended by the General Atomics designers!) I'd like to have it armed with four Hellfires too, but the kit parts are horrible, and I couldn't source any alternatives.

Thanks for looking.

Lovely job Gareth

Great paint finish and nice eye for the additional details. I really like the use of the RBF streamers and angling them in the direction of the breeze adds a most lifelike quality.

I've enjoyed looking at your Reaper, thanks for taking the time to share your model.

Thanks for the very generous comments. I'm especially pleased to read the positive remarks about the RBF tags as they reflect what I originally intended to depict, so I must be getting it right!

KursadA - I'd be very pleased for you to use the photos. They should be public at my Picasa page. If not drop me a line and I'll send some on.

Cheers all,

Gareth
