FAA A-4C, San Julian airbase, Santa Cruz, 1982

Recommended Posts

A fantastic looking build. I like all the little details you added, and the painting, especially around the canopy, is perfect. Looks like the hoop antennas on the tail are a little off.

Absolutely great, always wanted to do this FAA A-4C, could you please tell me did you use any aftermarket?Any conversion for C version?Do hasegawa make A-4c? Excellent work, love it a lot...

Hasegawa made C versions in the past, but the last one released (a limited release which happened to include resin parts for Argentinian A-4P and A-4Q versions) came out about 6 years ago. Any version of the C isn't easy to find now.

Thank you all mates.

I used a standard Hasegawa A-4C box even if I still have a Falkland war box in my stash.

Resin parts in the Hasegawa kit are wrong or rought so I used a piece of resin by Aerocalcas Argentinas for the dorsal antenna (and reduced it a lot in dimensions) and srachtbuilt the other 4 antennas needed.

Please note Hasegawa instructions and painting guide are all completely wrong in the Falkland War box. Only use period photos as references.

My decals are also from Aerocalcas Argentinas.

Colours used are by Gunze: off white with a drop of tan, dark green with 20% of olive drab and very light gray for the bottom (the same colour as used on early F/A-18A/B it is the lighter gray in guze's range).

I only used some Eduard coloured PE pieces for the cokpit and a Pavla resin seat.

I like your FAA Charlie... impressive work.

And agree about Hasegawa Malvinas/Falklands box, the decals are totally wrong in both Navy and Air Force versions.

I can't notice if your model includes the external stores (4 and 5) for bombs, missiles or rocket launchers, a feature (with the wings spoilers) wich distinguise the Argentinean A-4C.

As I said... a very nice model.

Congratulations.

Yes, I added the external wing pylons to my A-4C as per modifications made in Argentina, since I can't find suitable 250kg boms I'm still after something to hang on it, any idea?

Since you built a wartime A-4C wearing turquoise ID bands, the only choose are iron dumb bombs used against RN ships or British troops in their approach to Stanley. For the first kind of missions the FAA used the Spanish made Expal BRP 250 parachute retarded. The best choose is for the second type of missions, wich the A-4Cs used the Expal without retarded devices. These bombs are almost identical to american mk 250kg bombs. You can use three, one in each store.

Hope you can find the bombs.

Bye for now...

Well you have another option for war load is to use a US TER with 1000 pounds GP british bomb you can find those on Airfix Jaguars and Harriers I believe in 1/48 scale

Armando, you are right about the type of bomb, but in fact the TER was not used to carry the British GP in war missions, this type of bomb was loaded in the centerpoint. I saw some pictures showing the 1000 pounds mounted in a TER in a non operational display causes the misinterpretation.

And this heavy British bomb was used during the first missions of the war, but it was soon replaced by more light bombs like the Expal. During those days the FAA A-4C were painted with yellow ID bands. I don't have evidence about the use of the British bomb while the FAA used turquoise ID bands.

Bye for now...

Very nice skyhawk!

Congratulations.

I'm planning to build more than one in the future, as there are so many interesting subject in the FAA and CANA aircraft alone.

I have two boxes of the Falkland/Malvinas/Malouines A-4 from hasegawa, and I've heard about the issue concerning the VLF Omega antenna.

But at the same time, I can't remember to have found on the net or in the books more than two or three pics showing the back of the aircraft to assess the shape and size of the antenna.

You're talking about Aerocalcas, but the antenna is out of stock since a long time there.

There is another address, Aconcagua Resin Models, who produce a wide range of Argentine conversion, and also kits and decals.
