Paint spots technique

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Quick technical question if I may?

I have seen this technique done some times on

other forums and again noticed it on Mooncats build

of the SB2C-4 in the display case.

Mooncat's build

The effect is quite stunning and helps (to me) "age" the paint.

I have some WWII USN 4 colour schemes I would like to try this on.

Some questions:

1) What (if any) dictates the colours used to spot

2) Does it matter, the pattern of spotting?

3) Whats the best paint to spot with?

4) Whats the best method of spreading the spots and cleaning off,

with out ruining your paint work.

5) Can you do this to the whole aircraft if it has a Multi type

paint scheme (eg WWII USN 4 colout scheme)

Anything else I might need to know, ie is there a tutorial somewhere

I can look at?

Many thanks in advance for your help/assistance

Regards :D

Alan

I'm not familiar with the specific aircraft build you've referenced. However, it looks a lot like a technique used frequently by armor builders...they call it a dot filter. I've used it a few times on tanks, but never with aircraft. In terms of what types of paints to use, it is basically the same compatability you'd use with washes. On acrylics, use oils and on enamel/lacquer use acrylics. If you use these combinations, then the thinner you use to "wipe" the spots off with will not affect your base painting. The pattern is not particularly important, just keep it random. As for what colors to use, well maybe someone else can help out here. I use colors I've seen others use and have looked good. These can be quite a wide variety.

Thanks for your explaination on this, helps me

quite a bit :D

I'll experiment on some old models

Many thanks

Alan
