janman
The options are below. As can be seen, my stash consists of older stuff, late 70's Group 4 cars and some B-Group cars from the 80's plus some post-B-Group Group A cars from the early nineties. I'd like to keep it this way since this is the era I'm mostly interested in. This way I can also keep my stash at a reasonable level (if there even exists such a level..?). I'd skip the three leftmost cars since I still would like to continue my Alen theme for which all the remaining kits are compatible - but not fully: no decals for Alen's car can be found for Lancia Delta Integrale and even if there were, no injection kit for 8-valve model exists (although the 16-valve can be pretty easily converted to 8v model of '89 season). No decals for Alen's Legacy either, but now I only would need the name tags, which can be fabricated one way or another. The two Fiats are both Alen's machines and so is the Safari Celica, whereas for the Impreza I have an aftermarket sheet with markings for Alen's car. I guess this would be a kind of non-binding referendum but any suggestions are welcome! Edited November 11, 2011 by janman
2qwik4u
My first choice would have been the Audi, but if you are wanting to continue with the theme, I vote for the Celica. -Dave
janman
Dave, I too would like to make the Quattro but for some strange reason there are no decals for Hannu Mikkola's car with these official factory colours. Actually only the name tags would be needed.
Bigasshammm
I vote either the Integral or the Abarth.
Grant in West Oz
Legacy RS. Brrmmm, brmmmmm G
Raceaddict
Impreza all the way! (But maybe I'm biased since my current Impreza is actually my third...)
janman
At the moment I feel it's time to do something a bit more modern (early 1990's modern?!) car and since no Alen decals are made for the Integrale (which is a big shame considering Markku Alen took a load of wins with both Delta HF and Integrale and was second (-88) and third (-87) in the championships), it's either Celica or Legacy. Surely it could be the Impreza as well but I'll probably spare it for the future. It's my newest rally car kit anyway. Stay tuned!
HOLMES
I would LOVE too see the Audi Quattro done by you but MY heart is alos pulling the Subaru IMPREZZA because of its DYNAMIC design and color scheme...... I will look forward to your build which ever you decide as I know you will make it look stunning ... HOLMES
Jay Chladek
I've always had a love of Lancia Deltas and the Fiat Abarths would be nice to see as well. But, if you want to go more modern, how about the Celica? That Celica is a cool looking ride in Rally warpaint IMHO compared to the rolling boxes that are the other machines. Shawn M
build the Lancia, its a great kit and goes together well with many opportunities to add detail.
janman
I've always loved Italian rally cars, even more Lancias and even yet more if they are festooned with the beautiful Martini colours. But, as already mentioned above, no decals can be found for Alen's Delta HF or Integrale even though the guy was basically a son to Fiat/Lancia team for fifteen years. Luckily there seem to be some small scale production of decals for the earlier Delta's but no Alen's name here either. http://www.modellismo.net/mercatino/showproduct.php/product/6742
janman
Seems Celica got two or three mentions. Sooo... Celica it is then! And I quite agree. One thing that really inspired me doing this particular car (besides the fact that it was Markku's car) were the photos on Reinhard Klein's excellent "Rally" book. The photos under the kit body really tell what the Safari rally was all about. Mine probably won't be that muddy though. The photo on the book's dust cover (another Finn, Juha Kankkunen flying high with two masai dudes watching taken during the same rally) is a breathtaking picture as well. The second book (above the body and also from Klein: "Rally Cars") is THE bible of all rally car fans. 600 pages of different rally cars from late '50s to the year 2000 with really awesome photos. I wanted to mention this book because it is something very essential for a rally car modeler or for anyone who's interested in the subject. If you see Reinhard Klein's "Rally Cars" somewhere, take a firm hold of it since they are quite rare these days and the prices you see on eBay and Amazon can be this high: http://www.amazon.com/Rally-Cars-Reinhard-Klein/dp/3829046251/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321027769&sr=8-1 Luckily mine was a real bargin although I got it from eBay. Worth every single penny!
2qwik4u
Awesome! I've got the Tamiya kit for the '93 Monte Carlo rally. I might just have to get it out and build along side you. -Dave
Shawn M
I too have that Klein book, is amazing.

janman
The interior is progressing fast. No footrest nor pedals are provided so I'll probably have to scratch them - among other things. Although, this being a Safari car, the windows will be quite heavily tinted and not much will be seen through them. This was something I expected - the kit comes with a tarmac suspension and it really shows. The ground clearance (and especially the lack of space between the tire and the fender ) just doesn't look right. I'll try to achieve some simple and elegant solution, maybe some kind of spacers between the chassis and the suspension components. Also the wheels are clearly from a tarmac car and are some 3mm too wide. The extra width is meant to be left inboard so it's not that visible but stupid it looks anyway. janman
Contrary to some negative rumours about the Hasegawa seat material, I found it to be very easy to work with. The instrument panel looks pretty good straight OOB (although these decals come from Shunko's sheet) but some other interior details need to be scratch-built. I already added the pedals for the driver and foot rest for the co-driver which were missing from the kit. One major omission from the kit is the spare wheel, but luckily the windows are quite heavily tinted so it doesn't bother me that much.
Bigasshammm
Your seat looks so much better than mine. I did find that if you put tamiya tape on the underside of the material it makes them even easier to work with. Nice job.
janman
Apart from the fire extinguishers and some smaller details the cockpit is now almost finished. No spare wheel was provided with the kit. Luckily I have five extra wheel/tire sets from Tamiya's Quattro, so one found its way to Celica's boot, albeit with scrathed OZ rally wheel lookalike cover. A scratched ratchet lashing strap was also added. The grey one on the left is an original kit wheel and the other one a five-spoke Audi wheel with a scratch-built cover. A bit smaller, but that doesn't matter here. The battery (with cover) comes from an old ESCI Escort RS, while the co-driver's foot rest, the perforated plate in front of the driver's pedals (plus the pedals themselves), the shock absorber top mountings and the tiny red master power switch on the mid console near the gear lever were scratch-built. Various hoses and wires are normal after market materials. The chassis is pretty much OOB and will stay that way. It looks pretty good for an curbside model anyway. Bigasshammm
I bow to your greatness. Looks amazing. I one day wish to be able to scratch build anything. lol

Jay Chladek
With all the stuff you are adding to the interior, it seems almost a shame to tint the windows. Nice work as always on your Rally cars janman!

That is exactly what I was thinking, Jay. At one point I even thought about making an openable boot lid but probably not. About tinting. What's the best way to do it? Tamiya Smoke from a spray can or tint decals?

Just don't use the stuff you need to heat up otherwise you could distort the plastic.
janman
The body is now painted and polished. On my third car model the paint finish turned out to the best I've achieved. This time I didn't need to polish it with Micromesh pads - Tamiya compounds were enough. Learning by doing! The blind mesh on the bonnet just doesn't work. Neither do the fully open intakes on the nose. I used Crazy Modeler's PE mesh for both.
