EAF Su-7 BMK - Yom Kippur/Ramadan War 1973

Recommended Posts

Hi,

It's time for an update on my progress with the mighty Su-7.

I had some trouble with the nosecone.

It isn't large enough.

201111171822.jpg

So I added some strips of plasticard to it.

201111181832.jpg

201111181833.jpg

And now it fits.

201111191839.jpg

201111191841.jpg

The cockpit has been glued in the fuselage.

201111191842.jpg

The nosecone will go in as soon as the paint has dryed.

201111191835.jpg

201111191837.jpg

I've also put the droptanks together.

The plastic fins has been exchanged with Eduards PE.

201111191843.jpg

And as per Dndieje's tip I've carved away the bottom of the fin to get a clean fit of the tail.

Unfortunally I've already glued it toghether before I got that excellent tip.

So I had to drill 90 small holes in the base to be able to cut it away.

I've test fitted it and this is the way to go. It's going to be a much better fit.

To be continued......

Excellent choice of subject and already looking good, Sir! The seat and pit are very neat; I have a question: did you prime them with anything special before painting? I can't seem to get any paint or primer to hold on NeoMega resin (yes, I cleaned it all vigorously first!). Just got hold of some Mr Resin Primer but haven't tried it yet...

Looking forward to following the rest of this build!

Thanks ChippyWho.

I didn't use any special primer.

Just Humbrol 140 directly from the tin.

I'll let this set for awhile before I glue the wings on.

To be continued...

Might be pushing my luck Marlin, this is your WIP not mine.

Some little tips though that might make the build a bit easier.

When you attach the wing to the fuselage you'll find that the gap between the flap and the fuselage is too wide (in my view anyway).

Best way to "solve" this is to hold the wing to the fuselage and insert a piece of plasticard between the rear of the wing and fuselage.

Make sure the plasticard follows the curve of the fuselage NOT the wing !

Insert some pieces of plastic in the gap between the plasticard and wing and tack in place with superglue so that the plasticard holds its shape.

When dry fill the resulting gap.

This goes a lot easier when the wing is not attached to the fuselage yet, makes the filling and sanding a lot easier.

It'll look something like this:

Top:

STA60001.jpg

Bottom:

STA60005.jpg

Also, the rudder is too narrow compared to the width of the tail assembly.

Easily fixed by splitting the rudder (it is one piece) with a razor saw and inserting a plasticard wedge.

The rudder hinges are wrong, they should be attached to the tail but are easily filled and rescribed:

STA60008.jpg

This is where the left-over scoop goes (not listed on the instructions):

STA60003.jpg

Reduce the gaps between the ailerons and the wing by gluing some plasticard to the edges of the aileron openings in the wing and smooth them over:

Just some tips that might avoid a lot of filling and sanding (sorry Aigore :D ).

Hi,

My Su-7 has got wings.

201111221852.jpg

I did get some good seams on the topside.

201111221853.jpg

201111221854.jpg

But not on the bottom

201111221855.jpg

I've sanded the seams and I've also put some Mr Surfacer 1000 on the seams.

201111251857.jpg

201111251859.jpg

The left wing had some sinkmarks around the wheelwell.

I've puttied it over.

Hopefully it will be enough.

201111251860.jpg

I've also found a picture of the Nile Valley scheme.

This is the one I'm going to do.

I've not yet decided on the weaponsload, but I'm leaning to four S-24 rockets.

Hi,

It's time for a progress report on my Su-7

This isn't a Tamigawa wunder-kit so everything takes a bit more time to get right.

I've put on all airscoops (Quickboost)

201111291885.jpg

201111291888.jpg

201111291893.jpg

And the stabilators.

I didn't like the large gap between the stabilator and the fuselage.

So after consulting Yefim Gordon/Dmitry Kommissarov excellent Su-7/Su-17 book I started to add some plasticard strips to the stabilators.

201107171543.jpg

201112071910.jpg

This took some time, cutting and sanding.

201112071911.jpg

201112071909.jpg

201112071908.jpg

It's not perfect, but a lot better than before.

Now it's time to do some PE in the wheelwells...

Hi Gang,

Today I've put in a full days work.

Almost all on PE.

201112101913.jpg

201112101914.jpg

The wheelwells are done.

201112101915.jpg

This extension of the pylon has to be exchanged for PE.

201112101917.jpg

And with a Micro-chisel that was a piece of cake. This thing goes through plastic like a hot knife through butter.

201112101919.jpg

All pylons added.

201112101920.jpg

201112101921.jpg

201112101922.jpg

201112101924.jpg

201112101928.jpg

And dressed with PE-parts.

And now I've done all metalworks I can do before painting.

So now it's time for some primer in this one.

To be continued.

Hi,

Since the last update I've painted the topside colours.

I've choosen WEM RLM70, Xtracolour IDF Green FS X4227 and IDF Sand X3531 for my scheme.

It isn't correct, but it's the nearest I could come from all information and pictures I could find.

201112261999.jpg

201112262000.jpg

201112302009.jpg

Now it's time to flip it over and paint the belly.

To be continued....

You've put a lot of work into this bird and I'm enjoying the progress. You did great with the PE. I've never had the guts to try it myself. But from watching your build, I cane see what a difference it makes. Good job! I'm anxiously following your progress!

I loooove fitters. Some nice work you put in here. Such a beast... The gap between the tail wings and the fuselage is quite huge on the real thing, so no need to fill that too much. I did the eduard's su-22m4 repack, planning a BKL ASAP. I know the fitting is terrible, so thumbs up for this one..

Hi Gang,

I've now turned my attention to the undercarriage.

201202092200.jpg

201202092201.jpg

201202092202.jpg

201202092203.jpg

201202092204_redigerad.jpg

Not so easy to assemble. And the instruction wasn't very clear either.

But from other onlinebuilds I think I got it right in the end.

I've also started on the ordnance, Four S-24 rockets.

201202092205.jpg

I got the rockets from Eduards MiG-21 kit.

The droptanks have been sanded and polished and are now ready for some paint.

201202092207.jpg

To be continued....
