Has anyone built the Moebeus '53 Hudson Hornet yet?

Recommended Posts

I'm working on one now, painted the body and assembled the engine.

A few minor quirks but overall a very nice kit. So far just dry fitting, the parts fit nice and tight. The engine detail is also very nice.

The quirks I've discovered are rather heavy mold lines on the front fenders, but these are not that hard to remove and I've heard it has been addressed so are less of an issue on later runs of the kit. There was also an issue with the decals, the air cleaner labels were not opaque enough and largely disappeared when applied. If you get a kit with the funky decals Moebius will replace them for the cost of a stamp.

My overall impression of Moebius has been very positive, they really seem to want to get their models right.

Here are some posts from a model car forum I belong to that can fill in the details.

A kit preview that has turned into a general review over the months. Lots of rivit counting but Moebius has been very responsive to comments and corrected many of the issues brought up.

Kind of an unofficial Hornet group build that has started up, so you can get some ideas of how the kit builds up. It started when the first kits hit the shelves so not many real WIP posts until you get 6 or 7 pages in.

A post from Dave Metzer of Moebius explaining how to get replacement decals.

Hey! thanks for all the great links! I LOVE cars of this period (30s to 50s); it would be cool to put one of these alongside my Galaxie 46 Chevy Aeorsedan, AMT 53 Studebaker and 58 Plymouth. It's really great to see a company doing something other than just another Chevy or Ford, too! (Nice, also, to find out that I'm not alone in my interest!)

Since you are familiar with the Galaxie kit I'd say the Hudson is comparable in quality.

If you like 50s cars 2011 should be good to you with Moebius having a 1955 Chrysler 300 due out, and Revell working on a 1950 Oldsmobile. There are rumors of Galaxie doing another 1940-50s car as well.

Yeah, the Galaxie-new-release rumors have been floating around cyberspace for the past couple years; whatever it is, if it's up to the standards they set on those Aerosedan kits, it'll be an instant classic. And there are so many potentailly great subjects from that period, what with all the independent companies that were still in operation into the early 50s!

I just picked up a Hornet and a Jimmy Flintstone Woody wagon to go with it. The resin casting is clean, looks good.

I read the build up article in the latest issue of Model Cars Magazine, and it looks like it should be a decent build. Its on my "to-do" list

It looks like all I have to do is figure out a way to scratchbuild the rear wagon compartment. Any suggestions?

Cheers, Ian

Just picked up two copies of the kit from Model Roundup. Worked on seam removal a little bit yesterday. VERY impressed wit the quality of the kit! I'll have to wait till necxt month to order the paint I need, which will be Tamiya TS colors, decanted from their respective rattle cans and mixed to my custom specs. I envision a cream over teal scheme.

cheers
