pigsty
This doesn't really matter, but it's going to bug me if I don't find out. Did the F-101 have leading edge flaps in any of its incarnations? I have one reference that describes them; the Monogram 1/48 kit has panels on the upper surface that could be inspection covers for hinges; and the fence has a break in it that could allow the forward part to dip when the flap was dropped. Yet no other reference confirms this and I - and quite a few other people - was sure that the leading edge was fixed. So I thought I'd come a bit closer to the source. Does anyone know? I have several photos I took long ago of F-101Bs taking off and landing, and none have any leading edge flaps. Don't know about the other versions, but I thought they all used the same wing. I could be wrong though. Here's some of my photos: Scott W
theplasticsurgeon
I just perused the Airlife book Century Fighters. No Voodoo slats shown in there either.
Finn
No leading edge slats on the Voodoo. However if i remember correctly, during overhauls and maintenance the ledging edge could be manually swung down to get at structure inside the wing. Jari
ALF18
Definitely no leading edge flaps or slats. I was lucky enough to get a ride in a CF-101B in 1985. The thing flew like a hunk of lead - keep it going fast, and it hangs in the air, but slow down and it falls like a brick. Can't help you with the maintenance panel possibility, but I have definitely never seen the leading edge hang down in over 20 years of being around bases where these beasts flew. Jari Ah-ha - I think that's probably the explanation!
