MarkD
I'm building this kit now. The orbiter is a kit I got years ago. The ET and SRBs are from a new kit I got months back. http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/342/3/6/columbia__s_tank_by_onigojirakaiju-d4ijh7e.jpg
VA-115EFR
Love the texture on the ET! What did you use to get that look? Couldn't help but notice the orbiters in the background, do you have any pics of them posted anywhere? I'd like to see them!
MarkD
Love the texture on the ET! What did you use to get that look? Couldn't help but notice the orbiters in the background, do you have any pics of them posted anywhere? I'd like to see them! I used model Masters Chrome yellow for the darker color of the tank and Testor's Flat Yellow for the lighter colors. My other models are seen on here in this section of the forum. How do I get this tone on the aft end of Columbia? http://images.ksc.nasa.gov/photos/2002/medium/KSC-02PD-1762.jpg My otehr orbiters i painted to look brand new. Columbia is the only one I want to show her age. More reference photos. http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/medium/02pd0191-m.jpg http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/medium/03pd0075-m.jpg http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/medium/02pd1892-m.jpg My favorite photo of Columbia http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/large/02pd0048.jpg http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/medium/02pd0048-m.jpg This photo is what inspired me to use the paints on the external tank that I've been using. MarkD
New photos of the kit being built. The ET. http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/006/6/f/sts_107et_by_onigojirakaiju-d4lgxzi.jpg SRBs http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/006/e/f/srb_strain_guages_by_onigojirakaiju-d4lgy1s.jpg http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/006/3/a/srb_strain_guages_2_by_onigojirakaiju-d4lgy47.jpg The two SRB photos show the straps that cover the strain gauge wires. The second photo of them shows the type of strips I used. you can see them on the real Columbia here on the left booster. http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/large/02pd0048.jpg Atlantis also has them http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/images/large/2011-5359.jpg The left booster has them seen on the orbiter side and the right booster has them on the aft side. A little detail for any post Challenger shuttle stack. Edited January 6, 2012 by MarkD
crowe-t
Mark, It's good to see you added those straps to the SRB's. I noticed those and added them to mine a while ago. In fact I remember you asking me about them being more on the left side. Edited January 6, 2012 by crowe-t
MarkD
Your model helped in that it made them easier to see. :) I'm painting the ET still.
crowe-t
Mark, Post some pictures when your ET is done being painted. Mike.
MarkD
I will. :) This link has some good references for the ET. http://mafet.org/ Edited January 7, 2012 by MarkD
MarkD
The external tank and SRBs are completed. :) http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/013/5/1/sts_107_stack_by_onigojirakaiju-d4m6xfo.jpg
Vince Hoffmann
You're really cranking out the models!
MarkD
I decided to switch orbiters. The orbiter that came with this kit will be Columbia. The old Columbia will become Intrepid (fictional orbiter seen in the movie MoonTrap) that has the RMS and OBSS. I'm having trouble with the old orbiter. Years ago I tried to make it a flying model, but gave up, but am now stuck on how to resin cast new elevons for it. You can see in this photo the model is quite old. The tape is peeling in some places and the flat coat is obvious on the crew cabin with the tile color. http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/129/0/5/columbia_model_shuttle_by_onigojirakaiju-d3fz7a2.jpg http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/231/f/8/atlantis_and_columbia_models_by_onigojirakaiju-d473nsj.jpg
MarkD
My new photos of Columbia done, save for a decal or two. http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/027/2/7/the_entire_fleet_by_onigojirakaiju-d4nr4pu.jpg http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/027/d/b/left_side_of_columbia_model_by_onigojirakaiju-d4nr4so.jpg http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/027/e/0/columbia_and_challenger_1_by_onigojirakaiju-d4nr4un.jpg http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/027/7/2/columbia_and_challenger_2_by_onigojirakaiju-d4nr4w2.jpg http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/027/c/d/columbia__s_bipod_ramps_by_onigojirakaiju-d4nr4no.jpg On the orbiter's wings. I used Evergreen K-2 strips for the edges of the elevon hinge panels. This photo is what gave me that idea. http://www.collectspace.com/images/news-031510a/012.jpg Edited February 1, 2012 by MarkD
