Carbon Fiber decal for car Interior use.

Recommended Posts

Anyone know who makes and possibly which decal sheet would be good for car interior use.

I got a Tamiya Lexus LFA for Xmass, looking over pictures of the real car it seems to have a good amount of carbon in the interior and do not think Tamiya gives the decals for it.

Check out the Lexus site before you start your build. They have a really nice "build your own" feature that shows the full interior. Their are a ton of options available for the interior, of which Carbon Fiber is one. I'm going to be doing mine in Red on Red.

Dave, my dad "car nut like me" got me the LFA and GTR for this Xmass, He is a NASCAR fan like me, I am thinking yellow, same color as the one Kyle Bush lost his L.I.C in.

This is pretty much what I picked out.

Nice. I'm doing mine in Pearl White on the exterior and full red on the interior. Normally I don't do cars in white, but I think it looks really really good on this car. I'm doing a build log on mine, but I haven't done much on it recently. Good luck with yours!

Spot Model is particularly good for close-up shots of the actual sheets, so you can see what it really looks like (as the descriptors are often vague).

I have, and have used SMS, Hobby Design, Crazy Modeller and KA, and all worked well. I also *have* some S27 stuff, and think it's way overpriced for what you get. Each has its fans and detractors in the modelling community, so it's largely a matter of availability and picking whichever one matches the pattern you're trying to duplicate. I'd suggest getting a couple of different sheets though, either different manufacturers or patterns or sizes, to mix things up and add more visual interest so it doesn't just blend into one carbon-ey mass. Also, you may want/need to overspray your decalled pieces with some smoke to tone the metallic shade down and add some depth.

I am guessing with scale motorsports I should use #1024?.

Anyone seen pics of the stuff on interior work or have a picture of it?

Only reading I have done so far is with the 1/12 bike guys using it, they seem to like the 1/24th decals for their work and has me thinking 1/24th "1024" might look to big for 1/24th.

It all depends on the look you are trying to achieve. Being that you are doing the interior of a production car with it, you are probably going for a form over function look, which means a larger weave, with a nice gloss coat over the top. If you were doing a race car however, smaller weave and a flat coat might be in order. In the real world, glossy carbon fiber means they used a lot more epoxy during the layup, which makes it heavier, but nicer looking. For racing applications, or anyplace where weight is an issue (aviation for example)you want as little epoxy as possible, which gives a rougher surface texture. I'd say go with what you like the looks of. Its your model, build it how you want. The LFA's were/are very customizable anyway.

Since it is inside the car, I want something looking close to scale, specially since it will be parts of the dash and steering wheel. Would look gory say if the weave was close to the size of the switches.

Edit,

This is what I mean by looking gory/toy like. Carbon decal comparison that comes in the tamiya R34 GT-R Z tune and a real steering wheel. See what I mean?

I just looked at the sheets that I have, and I think you will be ok with the 1/24th stuff. I have the Twill weave in Pewter, Silver, and Bronze. If you go with the Pewter, you probably won't need to overcoat it with the Tamiya smoke. I think the reason the bike guys are using it is because it looks like a finer weave in 1/24 which is what they use on the bikes for the more functional components. The "pretty" CF parts have the slightly larger weave. That said, its very difficult to even tell that the twill weave sheets are made of small rectangles, it looks more like very fine lines. I think you'll be fine.

Here you go. I just pulled my sheets out and took a picture for you.

The Pewter color is on the left. I don't think the color on the right is even available anymore. I just checked the website and I didn't see it. The ruler is in milimeters.

Wouldn't be a terrible idea to go with some 1/43 stuff, but it basically depends on the look you're going for, and how subtle you want it to be. 1/43 may actually be more "in scale", but it'll be less visible inside the car, where 1/24 would stand out a little more. That being said, the weave seems to be relatively large:

Lots more pics here, to see what actual interiors are like:

I'll try to shoot some comparison CF decal shots tomorrow so you can compare the 1/24 and 1/43 SMS stuff, and some of the Hobby Design/Crazy Modeller/KA sheets.

Thank you guys,

Dave, the sheet you posted on the left, that is #1024, this one?

That's the one. They are actually both marked as #1024. The one on the left is the newer sheet. I seem to remember them changing the color a few years ago to the darker pewter color.

-Dave

Thank you for the info bud.

SMS 1/43 decals (top) vs. SMS 1024 (bottom):

Same again with the centre console and steering wheel on top:

SMS 1020 (top) vs 1024 w. wheel and console:

Three different Crazy Modeller patterns:

Same again with console and wheel:

I've got some SMS 1424 somewhere, but can't find it (nor the KA stuff).

Looking at the above, and the actual wheel, I'd be tempted to go with one of these:

http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/32uagjrswn9j7lte3nn5.html (probably this, as it'd be finer, though I may mix and match)

http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/agtkuvicmeolwgx4drz1.html

Or this (which should be the same as Crazy Model 404 above), or possibly SMS 1524, though I have a feeling that might be too large.
