2qwik4u Posted December 14, 2011 Share Posted December 14, 2011 Well, being that I'm one of the mods for this GB, I figure it's about time I signed on with a build. First one up is the Tamiya Ford Escort RS Cosworth rally car. This particular example is in the Michelin Pilot livery, which I feel is particularly striking. This car won 4 out of 5 races in the British Rally Championship in 1994. I got really excited about starting this one, and I installed the two hood vents and then primed the body and all of the rollcage and chassis components, and then realised I didn't have the correct spray can of Tamiya blue. Here is the body all primered up. I didn't take any pictures of the other parts primered up, because its white primer on white plastic. Lots to see. The blue paint is on the way, but in the mean time I can't really do much on it because everything pretty much installs to the chassis, which needs to be painted blue. I have the yellow to do the body, but I'm going to give the primer a few more days to fully cure before I tackle that. Thanks for following along, -Dave Quote Link to post Share on other sites

The yellow in the picture isn't quite what it is in real life. It's really a brighter, lemon color. 2qwik4u Posted March 7, 2012 Author Share Posted March 7, 2012 Well I got side tracked with finishing up with my STi, but now that its done, I made some more progress on this. For this build, I decided it would be better to build up the roll cage first and then paint it as one unit. The reason for this is that it doesn't fit together as well as the STi cage did, so now I can sand and putty the joints that need it. I glued the cage together, but it is just sitting in the chassis for alignment. I've since puttied up and sanded the joints, and then primed everything with Alclad white primer. Next step will be to decant the Tamiya X-15 Blue and airbrush it. Hopefully I can get to that tomorrow. -Dave Quote Link to post Share on other sites
2qwik4u Posted March 13, 2012 Author Share Posted March 13, 2012 Well, I didn't get to painting the blue as soon as I had wanted to, but I did get to it! Here's the cage: And the chassis/interior: I'll brush paint the padding on the roll cage later. The chassis was a royal pain due to all of the little nooks and crannies, which is the main reason I like to airbrush the color instead of shooting it straight from the can. Even with paint that covers as evenly as the Tamiya sprays, you would still get areas that didn't get enough coverage, or areas that had way too much coverage and end up with paint runs. I also shot the rest of the interior pieces and the wing, which I didn't get pictures of. I did however get a picture of the body: The yellow was polished prior to laying down the blue, but I still need to polish out the blue. After that I need to mask off the areas for the flat black trim, and then it will be on to decals. Looking at the instruction sheet, it looks like the decals are going to be a real nightmare. There is a large "Pilot" logo that goes over both hood vents, as well as a two piece Michelin man that covers almost the entire rear of the car, not to mention the large blue and yellow decals that go over the color separation line. 2qwik4u Posted October 9, 2012 Author Share Posted October 9, 2012 (edited) Yay for progress! So, I have actually been working on this on and off for the past (yeesh) 7 months. I finally fired up the airbrush this weekend and painted a bunch of the smaller parts that I've been neglecting. I've pretty much got everything installed onto the bottom of the chassis: Definitely colorful. Most of the interior pieces have been painted as well, I just haven't gotten pictures yet. I still need to finish painting the seats. The next big hurdle is going to be the decals. I'm almost afraid to start them. I think I will put a clear coat or two on the body first, because I'm still not happy with the condition of the surface. Here are a couple pictures of the interior progress: The one sidepanel still gets one small decal on the little black outcropping on the lower sidepanel. I'm assuming this is the trip computer. I also finally manned up and started working on the decals. Everything got a coat or two of Tamiya Clear and dried for a couple days before applying the decals. Wheels: Dashboard: Seats: I also braved starting the decal work on the body. I'm not overly happy with this so far. I used the Tamiya Blue spray as recommened by the instructions, but the color match isn't that great. Just sitting on the bench at a normal viewing distance, it doesn't look that bad: But when you turn it on its side and look a little closer, you get this: It's tempting to strip the body and start over and just mask off the scheme, but in the interest of time, I'll probably just deal with it. Most of the color separation line is going to get covered up with the sponsorship decals and number plates anyway. Well, that's it for now. If you had sprayed the can onto a silver basecoat that probably would have lightened it up a bit. Oh well still looks good and with a typical race car the amount of sponsorship really hides differences. Interior looking good. Especially the seats. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

It just about good chucked a couple times. Here's a few shots of the finished interior, minus the sidewalls. Everything here went very well and everything just fits. I'm really happy with this part, and if I could have just stopped here, I would have. Alas, that is not the case. Yes, because it is a race car, we have decals. Because it's a rally car we have lots of them. You've already seen the first stage of decaling above. So far, I had been presently suprised with these decals. Normally, non-Cartograph Tamiya decals scare me. They tend to be a little thick, a little stiff, and very large. For example, the Michelin Man on the rear of the car is two pieces. TWO!!! And they expect you to get both of those to conform around that entire surface. The "Pilot" decal on the hood is one whole piece, louvers and all! So, armed with fresh bottles of Micro Set and Micro Sol and some nice hot water, I dove in. All in all this took me two sessions to finish up. Overall, I was pretty happy with how it turned out. Initially. I had gotten the decals to snuggle down fairly well into the louvers on the hood. Even the Michelin Man on the back of the car looked decent with only a couple very small wrinkles that I couldn't get out. Yay, this is going well! I'm in the home stretch! All I have to do now is clear coat it, throw a couple parts on, and bam, done deal. Let me just lay this out for you real quick here. Tamiya kit, Tamiya decals. The primer was Alclad, but the color paint was Tamiya, with a nice Tamiya Clear Coat on top of that. Lets see here, what would be the best clear coat to go over this, hmmmmm, how about...Tamiya! That can't be bad right? So I grabbed my spray can of Tamiya Gloss Clear, and laid down a beautful gloss coat over the decals. Man this stuff sprays nice, I'm going to have to get some more of that. At this point I decided that this was my new favorite gloss coat in all of the world. All hail Tamiya! Hey I've got a few other models that are ready for a gloss coat, I'll shoot them too while I'm at it. A couple of RQ-7 Reapers - glossed. Matchbox P-12E - glossed. MQ-1 Predator - SHAZAM - glossed. I slipped the can of clear back into it's hip holster, proclaimed that my work there was done, shut off the lights, and went to bed. The next day after work I ran down the steps like a kid on Christmas morning, wild anticipation of the mirror like finish on all of the models I had sprayed the night before. I grabbed the Predator, not bad, probably could use another coat, but not bad. I grabbed the first Reaper, WTH?? The paint had wrinkled in a few small places. The second Reaper, almost the entire top of the fuselage was wrinkled. Crap, I didn't wait long enough for the base coat to cure. Surely the P-12E would be ok, I painted that back in March, but there it was wrinkling across the entire tail surface. My world was starting to crumble, what happening? It was like an episode of the Twilight Zone. Oh no, the Escort. Hours of labor getting the decals down. I grabbed the paint stand holding the body and looked. Relief. Everything was nice and shiny and smooth. But wait a minute, this doesn't look right. It looked like I had dipped the entire body in a vat of Micro Sol instead of Gloss Coat. Every little area I had worked at to get the air bubbles out had swollen. The decals around the window frames had pulled back and curled. The decals inside the louvers had started to melt. Observe: If anyone wants a half empty can of Tamiya Clear spray, you are welcome to rummage through my trash can. It pretty much went downhill from there. Hey look the windshield wiper didn't want to stay on and I managed to sit on it. Hey the mirrors don't fit right. At that point I decided to try a trick that I had read about somewhere. I had heard that some people like to use a Sharpie to do the black around the outside of the window. I figured that since this kit was issued before they had the precut window masks I'd give it a shot. Couldn't make it any worse right? Yeah, I won't be trying that again. Personally, I think the interior came out great, but I'm definately not happy with the overall result. This one will get brought in to my club meeting for the "Need for Speed" theme next year, and then after that it will probably just hide behind my Subaru model for the rest of its life. And with the Subie: In the pictures, it doesn't look bad. From about a foot away, it looks ok, but any closer than that and it just looks terrible. Oh well, that's modeling. By the way, the Reaper models got sanded down and resprayed with the base coat. They'll get a nice MM clear coat in the next day or so. I just said the heck with it on the P-12. I really didn't want to strip the whole thing down just to respray the yellow tail surfaces. Thanks for following along.
