B-17 guy
Ok, sucks that they are being discarded like that, but of all way ways to get rid of them. Why in the hell would they just bury them? Why not scrap them for recycling? Wouldnt burying them be an enviromental hazard. Seems stupid to me.
camaroz06
I think this came up a few months ago. I remember someone saying maybe the RAAF was required to dispose of them in a certain way or that scrapping would cost too much.
Kevan Vogler
I think the disposal method had a lot to do with how much asbestos was in the airframes and how difficult it would be to remove before the aircraft were safe for scrappers to touch. Issues of soil contamination notwithstanding, burying would be seen as the most cost effective yet still acceptable form of disposal.

Environmental concerns (and maybe metal prices, as well) have made recycling military hardware financially unfeasible in a lot of cases. It's why so many ships are probably going to end up serving extended artificial reef duty.

Grant in West Oz
Got rid of that lot. What's next, more F-18Fs? How about those Indian Sukhoi 30MKSs! We're a big unsinkable landing strip. G
echolmberg
Sort of makes you wonder what archaeologists 10,000 years in the future will think when they find these. Eric
