1/48 Monogram PBY ????

Recommended Posts

I want to get a monogram 1/48 PBY amphibious version. What is the difference between the "Pro Modeler" -5A version and the PBY/OA-10A (855617) kit. I do not require the RA-Dome nor the funky front turret. Is there any photo-etch in the ProModeler kit? or anything like that?

As I recall, the Monogram PBY came out as the flying boat version, without the landing gear. I remember waiting until the Pro-modeller 5A version came out before I bought a few (one of which I almost finshed once or twice) But there was NO photo etch in the kit, and other than a new sprue with the landing gear, I dont know of any other changes to the kit.

That is what I thought. I can buy the standard, or most recent issue of the PBY/AO-10A version for $27 It is the -5A without the RA-Dome and with the original nose blister. On eBay they are asking a lot of extra money for the ProModeler kits. The only other difference is that it comes with the air-sea rescue decals and not Navy decals.

Otto,

There is no difference between the current PBY-5A and Promodeler kit. They are one in the same.

Thanks,

From what I can tell there isn't anything different between the two at all. Basically just different decals it looks like. I did find an inbox review for the newer release though http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/rm/kit_rm_5617.shtml I also found an insane buildup of one that might come in handy though http://www.ipmsdeutschland.de/Flugzeuge/Gaeste/Wolf_Catalina.html Good luck with it. The kit is massive. I have it in the stash and have yet to finish it.

I found that same build that I pulled to my desk-top, The in-box review link will not work for me.

I want to build the private bird of General Geiger, at Guadalcanal. It was used to drop torpedoes at one point. Here is a cool painting of the event.

largeTerror-USMC.jpg

In the picture we see Maj. Jack Cram, aide and personal pilot to General Roy Geiger (Guadalcanal air boss) releasing the first of two aerial torpedoes against the sides of the transports at Tassafaronga Pt. Cram and his five-man crew, flying Geiger’s PBY-5A (nicknamed the “Blue Goose”) jury-rigged wire-pull releases for the torpedoes, turning the Blue Goose into a torpedo-bomber, a first, successfully sinking one transport (see photo), then making a harrowing return-trip, with 195 holes in the aircraft….and, miraculously, no one hurt.

If the tail is an issue to you, Mike Belcher of Belcher Bits has a couple of resin correction sets available. (Link to page first, then link to photo)

Also conversions to convert it to an earlier PBY-2 (thru -4) and the PBY-6.

No connection to Mike or his business, just wanted to share the info.

Well, I never noticed it until I saw reviews online that mentioned it. I don't know if I'll bother to fix it or not. Of anyone I know likely to see it once built, I'm the only one that would know. <_<
