One night in Vegas

Recommended Posts

Have to go to a company meeting in Las Vegas this week. Fly in the night before, 8 hrs for meeting the next day and then flying home the next AM.

I'll throw some money in the slots but I'm not a big gambler. Any thoughts on what to do for my one night in Vegas (and I guess for that matter, a 4 hour layover in Baltimore)?

Vegas is a FUN town, even if you don't gamble. There are a bunch of GREAT restaurants, and it's just fun to walk around and check out the different casinos--Bellagio has a mini-Venice, New York New York has a mini NY neighborhood and a pretty good roller coaster. In "Old Vegas" the Golden Nugget has a fantastic steakhouse and a huge pool with shark tank in the middle of it. The shows are good time too, and I can honestly saw I would never have thought I'd say that. Lots of stuff to do.

When I was there a few years ago, there was an indoor gun range that has billboards in the airport. It's not a bad taxi ride from the strip that you can rent and shoot full-auto guns--M16s, AK47s, Thompsons, Stens, etc. That was fun! I shot a Thompson and a Sten; I wanted to try the MP40, but it was broken. The Tommy gun was impressive, pretty heavy but easy to see how it was the Chicago Typewriter. The Sten on the other hand was junk--spray & pray!

There was a hobby shop not too far from the strip, I want to say it was like a HobbyTown USA or something like that maybe. Mostly usual stuff you'd expect, but I did score a Bandai Naussica kit there!

Rare Plane Detective's HQ and warehouse is in Henderson, which is the next town over; a bit more of a taxi ride, but if you have a rental it shouldn't be too bad to get to. I'm not sure what their hours are, check their website.

Nellis is just north of town, depending if they're running Red Flag, you might be able to catch a some glimpses of a bunch of neat jets too.

Have a safe & fun trip!

Curtis

I was in Vegas for the 3rd time with work in August and all I can say is.....

THE GUN STORE!!!!!!

Go to the Gun Store! that is the name of the indoor range I managed to part with about a hundred bucks and fired off An M-9 Beretta, MP-5, M-4 and a SAW Machine gun and spent the rest of the day grinning like a chesire cat I had an absolute ball. When you walk in and look at the "Menu" on the wall it is a Red necks dream come true and the pink AK-47 is something to behold.

As far as Hobby Stores go I dragged the boys along to Hobby Town it had some pretty good stuff, I was all cashed up but limited to carry on luggage only for the flights major downer! But be warned if you don't have a car we took a cab out there but it took 90 mins for another one to come after we called because they just don't hang out in that area and obviously the strip is full of the easy fares.

As far as checking out some of the more Vegas like things There is a brilliant Buffet downstairs in the "Rio" Don't eat that day before you go and make sure you check out the Alaskan King Crab Claws is my tip then head upstairs to the Voodoo Lounge and Get a Witch Doctor 8 Different White spirits, Pink Lemonade and Dry ice you will normally see around 4-6 Attractive loung ladies with 4-6 straws in one............. or the Australians with one straw :beer4:

Just a few suggestions for you to mill over but Enjoy your trip

Cheers

While I've never been to Vegas, I know from reputation that the Vegas Hobbytown is the biggest in the country (and that says a lot as I worked for the SECOND biggest Hobbytown and IT was big). I hear the stock in it is pretty diversified as well. So it should have some good models. As to the prices though, I have no idea.

Be aware if you've never fired a rifle before or don't fire one regularly, you might be a bit miserable the next day. I fired a buddy's FN-FAL and AK-47 at the gun range once (in semi-auto mode, we didn't go full auto) and my shoulder was a bit sore for the next day or two (and that is NOT much fun on a plane ride, especially when you reach up to grab a drink from the flight attendant). So I would recommend sticking mainly to the pistols and doing the rifle firing "in moderation". Still, it can indeed be a lot of fun.

There are now two Tommys Old Fashioned Burgers in LV. Best chili burgers in the known universe. Never miss em when I have to go through Vegas.

I always enjoyed Tommy's much more than In N Out ...

John, have a safe trip ...

You have a layover @BWI? I work there when you gonna be coming through? Buy a fellow modeler a cup of coffee!

Hi Craig,

Supposed to have a layover tomorrow (Thursday) night but I'm trying to finagle my flights to get home a bit sooner. If it doesn't work out, I'll throw out a last minute post on ARC. If not, I'll try to meet up the next time I pass through BWI (one of the nicer airports out there BTW).

My night in Vegas didn't really happen. After my meeting, I had to attend a "voluntary" company dinner / drink-fest. Still had a good time though, the Hard Rock is a pretty cool place, plenty of interesting sights and I came away a few $ ahead from blackjack. Had a good time and given that the company picked up the tab, I can't really whine too much about the trip.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll put it to use if/when I ever make it through here again

John
