Looking spiffy, Mike!

Now you've done it again. I was just thinking that (one day) I would build my 1/32 Sabre in natural metal finish, and then I see how beautiful the camo job looks on yours... Decisions, decisions.

ALF

Thanks ALF. However things got buggered up when I applied the final gloss coat to seal the decals. Oh the humanity...

That's exactly what I am going to be using. Now I'm really worried. Did you do a primer coat?

Big Daddy - I used a primer coat of MM Light Grey (36495). I then painted the model as usual. Blue first (2061) and went half way up the fuselage. Taped for demarcation line and then with the RAF Dark Sea Grey (2059), taped for demarcation between green / grey and then shot the RAF Dark Green (2060). Flat black for anti glare panel and tail radar cover. Radome tan for the cover on the radar ranging gunsight. Interior green for the wheel wells. Alclad Aluminum for the wheel hubs and gear door interiors. Alclad Steel for the area around the exhaust opening. Primed the intake and exhaust covers with the grey and then sprayed MM Guards Red. As you can see in the thread, everything was going swimmingly until I sprayed the final gloss coat.

I have stripped off the old decals in preparation for repainting. I am NOT going to let this setback deter me. It'll also give me the opportunity to make the corrections Tony noted in his post (windscreen frame colour and some wing stencil placements).

It's back to the paint booth for a second attempt at a 441 Sqn Sword. Let's see how this one turns out.

I know you can fix it Mike, mine is almost presentable again. Bit more work , but its almost presentable. It seems Canadian 1/32 Sabres are not having a happy week.

Geez, that's too bad. Really enjoy seeing all the Canadian Sabres going together. Hope you can recover the build.

Don

Don - thanks for the support. I have managed to strip off the old decals and sand down the paint imperfections. I've also crazed the gloss coat to give the next layers of paint a bit of bite. Going downstairs shortly to lay down the second attempt at painting and decalling this Sabre. Phantom has graciously donated his unused Leading Edge 441 decals to this project. A good man, he is.

Well, Mike whatever you got must be contagious coz I effed up the paint job on my Lanc build today too. :bandhead2:

Big Daddy - I'm sorry to hear that. :( Given the amount of patience I've seen you exercise during your two builds, I know you'll be able to salvage yours. What's that old British slogan...Remain calm and carry on. You'll come out smelling like roses too.

Hey Mike??????

Your not putting it in a kinder egg before it gets hooped are you???

*(INSIDE joke) OH!!! There is another one!!! :cop::woot.gif:

Bada bing! Bada boom! Try the chicken, folks. He's here all week. :D Thank you for your generousity Shawn. I appreciate it. PM sent.

Well most of the repaint is done. I've got the blue / grey / green done. I'm going to try to get the flat black anti glare panel and steel around the exhaust opening done tomorrow before I go for my afternoon nap. No...I'm not that old that I need an afternoon nap (sort of) but I'm working nights Wednesday and Thursday. If I don't get the last little bit of paint down tomorrow it will be done Friday.

I'm then going to try a Future gloss coat process as recommended by Chuck. Thanks for the pointer, Chuck.

Phantom has also graciously allowed me to pilfer some unused 1/32 441 Sqn markings from his Leading Edge sheet that he didn't use. That will allow me to complete this build as planned. Mucho appreciado, big man! :D

The painting is complete. A few minor touch ups and then it will be time for the Future. I hope to have that done tomorrow or Sunday at the latest. I was looking for a 'fingers crossed' emoticon but this  will have to do.

Two coats of Future were sprayed on Sat and Sun. They have been curing since then and I started the redecal process not long ago. I have to top of the wings done. Next will be the 50 - 60 stencils on the bottom of the wings and fuselage. I'll do that tomorrow if I'm feeling better. I think I'm coming down with a cold or flu bug. :bandhead2::explode:

Mike I ran into a similar problem when I was putting the final gloss coat on my Big Sword..Golden Hawk. I was brushing on the Polly Scale Clear Gloss and had to open a fresh bottle..only it wasn't the Clear Gloss Acrylic..it was Floquil Disol based lacquer.

The top surface of the wings turned brown and crackled. Sanding with 600 grit wet and respraying with my mix of Model Master Clear Gloss and Sheffield Luxor Pale Gold restored the finish but it wasn't the best effort.

And yes the bottled was labelled as PS Acrylic... :bandhead2:

Well I just finally finished reapplying all the stencils and main markings. After my last post on March 14th, I started to feel sick. I don't get sick very often but this bout of severe bronchitis has left me feeling like the four link steamers my dogs deposit in the backyard after they eat. This is the sickest I have ever been. Never before have I spent almost four days in bed. The worst is behind me but I'm still not 100%.

I want to thank phantom, again, for providing me with his unused 441 Sqn decals from his Sabre build. Also, thanks for your tip on the Future, Chuck. I'll take some photos of the decaled model tomorrow before I apply the top coat of Future to seal everything up.

To those who provided words of encouragement, that's what makes this site such a great place. Thank you.

Mike

Geez Mike, I hate to bring it up, but, doesn't the tail number go underneath the Red Ensign.

Still nice to see another Sabre getting built.

Model On !!!!

This build has kicked me in the pills so many times already, what's another shot to the nads! I knew something didn't look right but I couldn't put my finger on it. Thanks for pointing out that oversight Tony.

Fortunately, I had yet to apply the sealing coat of Future so fixing the problem was easy. As luck would have it, I didn't have to use Solvaset on any of the decals except the checkerboards and that was only because of the meeting of the two decals at the front of the vertical stab and them running across the rudder. I applied the Solvaset after getting the joint at the front acceptable. After that dried, I ran the point of a new #11 blade down the rudder join and applied more Solvaset to get things to settle there.

To fix my fark up, I simply soaked the affected decals with hot water (applied with a paintbrush) and carefully lifted off the serial numbers. I then loosened the Red Ensigns and moved them into the proper position and then reapplied the serial numbers underneath the Ensigns. I then repeated the same steps on the other side. Presto! Change-o! Be fixed-o! The proof will be in the photos of the finished model, hopefully next week.

I'll apply the sealing coat of Future tomorrow after the decals have dried again.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the words of support, BD.

I'm calling this one finished. By no means my best effort but based on the different setbacks encountered (self imposed or otherwise) I'm happy with the results. Without any further ado...Canadair Sabre 6, s/n 23495 marked as BT 495, 441 Sqn, 1 (F) Wing, Marville, France. The photos were taken on the bench and the stereo cabinet in the model room. As noted in my reply to Tony's post, see the corrections on the Red Ensign and serial number placement on the vertical stab.

Barney, Sebastijan and Don:

Thank you very much for your kind words. Great compliments from respected peers.

Now its on to my next project for the Escort Service GB. Hopefully this next build doesn't throw me as many curves as this Sword did! :woot.gif:

Thanks again, guys.

Mike
