DutyCat
I know a service academy appointment is very competitive, but the Navy let one get away from them here. That's okay. Although flying off of the ship is very rewarding professionally, living on the ship for months at a time is not much fun. It isn't awful, but there are lots of lifestyle and comfort compromises. Navy culture is also a little more Spartan as well. The Air Force heavily emphasizes the value of quality of life. I'll cite a quick example. When I was stationed in Sicily, we had an op go down which required KC-135 support from the USAF and EA-6B support from the USMC. The USAF arrived, took one look at the Navy barracks, classified them as "substandard," and put all of their folks out in off base hotels. When the USMC arrived, decided that they were not going to fund their Prowler guys to stay in the barracks, and decided to put them on cots in the base gym.
