MiG-21bis, Eduard 1/48 - DONE

Recommended Posts

Hola compaňeros modelistas! :)

So I'm here with my Latin American build - 1/48 MiG-21bis of Cuban Air Force.

The kit is Eduard's overtrees and I'm going to use only parts included the box (only few small details will be added)

This is the aircraft I build. It's the first 21bis delivered to Cuba.

At first I had to resolve one serious problem - blend cockpit colour to match pre-painted photoetched parts.

It took much time, but finally I got the colour. It doesn't match Eduard's colour for 100%, but is satisfactory.

To blend the colour I had used Tamiya's acryls X-14 Sky Blue, X-5 Green, drop of yellow and drop of white. But ratio of the colours I don't remember.

Painted cockpit, still to be weathered:

To paint wheel bays I have used grey RLM 02 (Gunze C60), wash is done with syntetic Tamiya XF-63 German Grey. Few wires are added (made of lead wire).

Very nice work so far! I can imagine color matching took some time.

I guess that's the disadvantage with pre painted parts. You have to trust they have done their research right, and find matching colors for the rest of the cockpit.

Cheers,

Håkan

Thank you guys for nice words!

What decals are you using for the tail, number, etc ?

I'm going to use painting masks. Designed by myself, cut by my friend.

Well, basic build is done.

Some small flaws, visible on bare plastic are filled with thick surfacer of Tamiya. In the next step (after grinding the filled points) I'm going to cover cockpit and wheel bays and then I will airbrush surfacer of Gunze.

Horizontal tail and vertical rudder are dry-fitted only.

Thank you gentlemen!

End of the fuselage is painted with various shades of Alclad II paints and bottom surface is painted with GSI C74. Weathering is done with darker and lighter mix of C74.

Top surfaces are painted with sand colour, still basic shade only. I haven't had proper colour, so i've used mix of GSI C44 and C313 in 1:1 rate.

The final colour I call "arena cubana" (in spanish "cuban sand") :-)

Pep: MiG-21 es siempre lindo ;)

Alberto: Sí, parece ese MiG tiene el mismo camouflaje. Ambos los aviones eran del primero abastecimiento de los 21bis a Cuba.

Well, warm-up for today's Spanish class is done, so let's get back to English :D

During Easter holliday I airbrushed gloss varnish (I've used Sidolux floor wax, Czech stuff similar to Future) and applied stencils from decal sheet. The decals had been printed by Eduard itself, are thin and easy to apply. Unfortunatelly there are few stencils missing on the sheet. More precisely, there are less decals than required by manual.

After applying the stencils I covered them with thin coat of gloss varnish and airbrushed them with very dilute camouflage colours to reduce their contrast.

After that I made wash with grey colour (synthetic Tamiya XF-63).

On these pictures you can see defenences after each step. The first picture was made after applying stencils:

And finally applied grey wash:
