Saw this military aviation episode of Collector Showdown

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I saw an episode of a show called "Collector Showdown" and it featured two model aircraft builders; Harvey and Tony. It pitted the two in a two round competition: the first was their knowledge of military aviation and the second was who could complete the most in a 10 minute build. Harvey specialized in Japanese WW2 aviation & Tony in American, German & Russian WW2 aviation. The show also featured a shot of Tony's 2005 IPMS/USA National Convention Atlanta, Georgia 1st Place 128C: Small Jet 1/48, 1st Place Split, 2nd Place 107C: Small Prop & Turbo-prop Single Engine 1/48 and 3rd Place 101A: Biplanes 1/48 & 1/32 trophies. The competition was held at the Toronto Aviation Museum - wonder if they're ARC members.

Spoiler Alert! Harvey wins the first round by answering 8 of 9 questions correctly; the one extra he got right was the only aircraft to bomb the USA lower 48 states which of course is the Yokosuka Glen. The one both got wrong was which two countries other than German had the swastika marking on their aircraft; both got Finland but missed Latvia. Round 2 the two were given a 1/32 scale P-47D Bubble canopy Thunderbolt to build in 10 minutes - the kit is the Revell Germany one eventhough the host covered the logo with her hand. This competition was judged by Jim Montgomery of TAM. Harvey also wins this round as he had the fuselage and two main wings while Tony had the fuselage and almost one main wing completed. Not all was a loss for Tony as a he got a 1/48 scale Tamiya P-47D Razorback Thunderbolt model kit as a consolation. Harvey won the top prize which was a flight in a de Havilland Tiger Moth.

The show also featured Mike Pijanka of Aviation World Toronto. The fullscale Avro Arrow at TAM was completed and painted in the white and red without the roundels, lettering and data stenciling so this will give you a good indication of how old the episode is. I enjoyed watching it and I also got 8 of the 9 questions right like Harvey. I got half the swastika one like both Harvey and Tony - Latvian aircraft now that's something interesting to build! I hope other on ARC saw it and enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers and happy modelling.

Eri,

Thanx for the youtube link. Too bad it's just the start of the show. It would have been nice if they had the q&a round of competition or the part of the competitor's models and trophies. I hunted youtube to see if there was more with no luck. Maybe someone knows of a link to more clips. Cheers.

Tony Bell is an ARC member but I don't think Harvey is but they're both phenominal modellers. I've had the pleasure of seeing some of their builds at shows around here.

Don,

Are you serious that the Tony in that episode is Tony Bell? Wow, I've dealt with & pm'd with Tony here a couple years ago. He has some really nice builds featured in that show. He was airbrushing oil streaks on a 1/48 scale WW2 Corsair in one scene. That's so cool it's Tony Bell!
