I found some good Engrish in my F-22 instructions

Hey, they got "flap down" right though. "Frappe down" would be an awesome error...

Yeah, with Frappes going at $4.89 at Starbucks, that would be an expensive dropped Frappe.

Yep...Japanese, other non-English speakers and their Engrish. Makes us cringe and occasionally have hysterical fits of laughter.

I get a chuckle just like the rest of you, but remember - the person who wrote that probably speaks more languages than you (and definitely more than me). :)

I speak, read and write English...and barely get by in Japanese (which is pathetic since I have Japanese heritage - bloody embarrassing!) but writing or reading Japanese is completely out. As far as other languages, yeah...I get your point.

Yeah, I don't knock non-native speakers in their efforts, though I am often left in wonderment at the contorted-yet-technically-correct constructs they create (I'm sure I've done enough of my own in Japanese and Russian). I am, however, baffled as to why they don't grab some English-speaker off the street or send an e-mail and ask,"Is this right?"

One of the kits I built earlier this year, either the Hase F/A-18E or the Kinetic Hawkeye, had a couple of gems. Can't remember.

We have a doctor at work who types 'clutches' on consults when he is ordering crutches. Great guy though.

Agreed, but I don't think we're really laughing at an individual here, or in any other case of 'Engrish'. The company they work for should do a better job of ensuring that their product is put forward in the best possible light, and it is their responsibility to hire proper translators, and double check their work with those who speak English fluently. And speaking two languages means little concerning one's intelligence. I work with someone who is fluent in English and French, but I'm not yet convinced that he can think in either language. whistle.gif

That's because the average native English speaker on the street probably wouldn't know if it was technically correct; most native speakers of most languages are the same. You don't think about the technical aspects of the language that has been hardwired into you all of your life, you simply use it.

A lot of my Czech friends are willing to help me a bit with some of my questions on that language, but if my questions start hedging too much towards the technical end of things they just tell me to ask my Czech teacher.

They can tell me how something is done, but they often are really stuck if I ask why it's done the way that it is.

I think it's an honest mistake, and think about it. If they make that kind of mistake in our language, how many have we made in theirs? I won't even start I can only utter two phrases in Japanese; Ohio and I ain't talking about the state and (hope I get this right) Doy tashi mashtay (or as told to me "Don't touch the mustache :woot.gif: ", and I've even forgotten what that means for sure I think welcome
