AX 365
Yesterday I did some work on the boom seams on the top of the wing joint at the front and the back. It looks much better. While it won't win any awards, it looks better than it did and I finished repainting the touched up areas about 15 minutes ago. I'll wait for that to dry and then mask for the olive drab possibly on Friday afternoon or over the weekend. The weather outside will determine how much the missus will let me do inside. It's that time of year and gardening needs to be started, lawn needs to be dethatched and raked, patio furniture needs to be brought up from the basement, etc. This project will be done by deadline day though. Honey-do lists and work have a strange way of eating into modeling time. I hate it when that happens.
AX 365
Well I finished masking and spraying the olive drab about 40 minutes ago. I'm just waiting for it to dry a bit longer before I remove the tape and see what kind of touch ups need to be made. The taping was a little more difficult than I'm used to. My sausage fingers had a bit of a hard time getting in between the booms and the centre nacelle to apply the tape. Thank goodness for tweezers and patience. I think it should be ok though. I'll post some progress photos later this afternoon. I still have to paint the superchargers and the red portion of the nose and the guns. After that's done, it'll be Future, decals and more Future. Thanks for looking. Mike
AX 365
A couple of more photos... The main colours have been applied. A couple of small doodads to be attached still. Future will probably be applied on Wednesday. Working afternoons / evenings. The props and wheels are just mounted temporarily to give an idea of what it will look like. I'm still working on the superchargers. I sprayed MM Metalizer Burnt Metal and then a very light mist coat of transparent red. I then dry brushed some Tamiya Red-Brown and painted the fan blades rust. Still some more work to do on them but to get these to look like the real thing is a lot of work. Anyway, here's a few shots. More photos as progress continues. Thanks for looking. Mike
ALF18
Looking nice and clean, Mike! The canopy masking must have been a nightmare, but the results are great. Looks like the superchargers are a lot of work, but those little touches will do a lot to make the whole aircraft look more real. ALF
Neo
Looks really good a little panel line wash and shell be a beauty !! nice superchargers btw
AX 365
ALF / Neo: Thanks guys. It's nice to see the finish line with this one. The superchargers still require some work and the photos really aren't a great shot. In the photo, due to the light, they appear more brown than they actually are. I need to add some grey and a few other touches to make them close enough for jazz. As for a panel wash, highly unlikely, Neo but I might for $hit$ and giggles. This kit has raised panel lines except for the ailerons, rudders and horizontal stab. I'll keep you posted on if I decide to dirty it up a bit. Cheers, boys. AX 365
Cool Build Mike.... Kinda been lurking here too... Shouldn't say that out loud Eh? Nice way of saying Peeping tom.... Emil Hey buddy! Thanks for the comments. This one is almost done. You're right, ALF. The canopy masking was a time consuming PITA but the results were worth it. I tried to use the Academy masks but it was a no go. I ended up using masking tape and a brand new #11 blade. The decals went down without too many problems. I used a mix of Academy and Aeromaster decals and stencils. Solvaset really helped them settle down nicely. I have decided to add the drop tanks to this build. As for weathering and the panel line wash, I'll pass this time. The superchargers are done enough for my liking and I may attempt some very subtle exhaust staining. As I was trying to fit the landing light lens to the wing, the stupid clear piece fell into the wing and I can't get it out. I've used Clear Fix to make a new lens. Its drying as we speak. Once that's done, another coat of clear to seal the decals and we're done. Pictures will be added when she's complete. Thanks for checking in. Mike
AX 365
Into the home stretch now. I just sprayed the flat coat; a 3:1 mix of Future to Tamiya Flat Base (XF-21). I'll look at the results in a few hours. Exhaust stains will be done tomorrow and then the final reveal.
ALF18
Just like you to delay the final reveal until I go away on vacation... I'll check in to see in a couple weeks! ALF
AX 365
Just like you to delay the final reveal until I go away on vacation... I'll check in to see in a couple weeks! ALF Je suis désolé, mon ami! I didn't know you were leaving today. Have a great trip buddy. IF, by any chance, you should find yourself in these parts, please don't hesitate to give me a buzz. Here's a couple of shots of the completed build. Not my best effort but not too bad. I'm somewhat happy with the way the superchargers and exhaust staining turned out. It was a first attempt so I won't complain. There are more shots in the complete build thread. I just have to paint the green formation light and it's completely done. Thanks to the mods for putting on this show and great work by all entrants. Thanks for letting me play! Mike

ALF18
Mike Nice work, my friend. Just got back from an exhausting but fun 2-week trip visiting family out West (better to ask where we DIDN'T go in ALTA/SASK/BC, rather than where we DID go... the list is shorter). I like the green and grey finish too. ALF
AX 365
Thanks ALF! I appreciate the feedback. Nice to see you back in these parts. Hope you had a great time and the batteries are well rested and recharged. Mike
