Rare Treat Tonight

Recommended Posts

What kind of engines did it have? They're converting all of them from TF33s to JT8D-215s, an engine/nacelle that has never been done in 1/72. Same basic engine as the MD-80 series has on it. Totally unique nacelle/pylon configuration on no other member of the entire 707 or C-135 family.

Damn...when was this???? You cant tell me I missed this all today!

There is an E-2C Hawkeye stationed here as well, I get to see it once in a while when they bring it to dry land.

I got really lucky tonight to see an E-8A Joint Stars doing touch & go's at Dobbins ARB Marietta, GA. Not sure what he was doing here...but did touch and go's for at least 45 minutes. Magnificent bird. I gotta build one now.

About 60+ miles down the road in Macon Gerogia is Warner Robbins AFB...that is where the JSTARS are based out of. Local flight for them to get some pattern work.

Cheers

Collin

There once was an old 707 which used to fly for Air Memphis of Egypt. It was converted with engines which looked like if they came of a DC-8. Maybe this is how they will do it? Anyhow the aircraft lost 2 of it's engines in flight to Cairo but made it to a landing. But the plane was damaged beyond repair. Here you can see a close up of the engines

Somehow it looks really retro airliner and if this is the future for these E-8s I'm ok with it. TF-33 would look good, but I guess this looks better then these CFM turbo's like on the KC-135Rs ;)

No pics...sorry. Jennings...it had TF-33's on it. Nothing like em. High pitched screeching sound. Beautiful. Reminds me of Cold War days.

LOL...it was about 7:00pm to about 7:45pm give or take a few minutes. I think the E-2C is gone now. It was part of NAS Atlanta. Although...I have seen some Hornets buzzing around here lately. Not sure what they're doing here. Yeah...at Dobbins it's either feast or famine. Sometimes it's non-stop action. Other times....dead. Ahhh...the good ole days. But then...the Air Force Reserve side is supposed to be getting 10 C-130J's by 2014. 12 total by 2017. Yipee!

There was at least one private 707 converted with hushkitted nacelles and engines from a DC-8-63. I saw it on the Signature rap at IAD one time, and I almost wet myself. I can't begin to imagine the insane amount of money some rich guy had to pour into the engineering and STC required to put outdated engines on an antique airliner like that. AFAIK it was the only one there was.

Maybe the airforce is now saving money because of him :P

The trip from New Orleans (VAW-77's new home) to Dobbins for a couple approaches or laps in the pattern and back is right about 3.5 hours which is our normal training flight time. Since some of the squadron's weekend warriors live in Atlanta, that trip also gives them an opportunity to check for strange cars in the driveway while they're away.

Are there any drawings anywhere of the JT-8D engine pods with the pylons? I'd love to scratch build these motors or kit mingle from a Minicraft MD-80 and put them on a Minicrap 707. I've searched around and haven't been too successful in finding pictures.

Thanks

Alex

Believe it or not, these jets do touch and goes every so often at our little airport here in Medford, Oregon.

Freaks people out here in the valley. They call the local authorities in a state of panic wanting to know why is there a "big white airplane" circling in the sky?
