CD48010 - Air National Guard F-101B

Recommended Posts

I am almost done with the design of the first ANG F-101B Voodoo sheet. There is still some work left to refine some of the elements(not all the stencils are there, The Oregon red hawk is shown in a simplified form, etc.), to finish the stencils and the final layout of the sheet. I will post a final draft sometime this week. Meanwhile, here are the options:

-F-101B 58-0306, 132nd FIS, Maine Air National Guard

-F-101B 58-0304, 136th FIS, New York Air National Guard

-F-101B 58-0339, 123rd FIS, Oregon Air National Guard

-F-101B 57-0300, 116th FIS, Washington Air National Guard

This sheet will be available in both 1/72 and 1/48 around mid-to-late May.

Hi Kursad,

Well, it looks like I'd better get my 1/72 Revell F-101B dusted off and ready to go. Thanks so much for the 1/72 decals, I can't wait to buy my set (and of course your 1/72 F-100 decals when they are ready). They look fantastic!

Here is the final design as I sent to be printed. I dropped the NY ANG markings since I ran out of space in the sheet; but Monogram provided this in one of the boxings anyway. If this is successful, I will definitely do a second one with Texas, Minnesota and perhaps a couple others.

I drew the artwork from period photographs of active Voodoos; and not the numerous preserved, repainted exhibit aircraft. I can't make up my mind about whether the Maineiacs script had a white border or not. I have seen some pretty convincing photos suggesting that it did; but then again I heard from several people who claim to have worked with the aircraft and can swear that it did not. I finally threw up the towel and provided both options. I personally think it did have a small white border, but it's your call.

It should be available sometime in late June. 1/72 will be coming later in summer.

Picked up another Revell 1/72 F-101B today at a model show. Any chance of a picture of the instruction sheet for the Maine version so I can make a start on my Voodoo ? Oh and looking forward to a second sheet, with a Happy Hooligan, Texan and Minnesota on it.

Hi Kursad, you're certainly turning out some top notch sheets.

Any chance of a International Mirage 2000 sheet?

Hi Scott,

A Mirage 2000 sheet is certainly a good idea. Most of the major operators (France, Brazil etc.) have been covered fairly well by local specialist decal businesses, but I will look into this suggestion. Let me know if you have any ideas for second or third countries that you think should be covered(I already know the first one).

This sheet and your F-102 sheet look great!

Do you have an ETA yet for the 1/72 version(s) Kursad? Thanks,

Hi Derek,

I am putting it together this week. As I mentioned before, I will release a few mixed subject (F-100,F-101 & F-102) ANG sheets in 1/72. This (and most of my future 1/72 sheets) will be printed at the Czech Republic; and I expect to send them to the printers within a couple of weeks.

The instruction sheets are in, and I will start shipping these this weekend. Judging by the number of preorders, the F-101B and F-102 sheets will probably sell out fairly quickly. First reviews should be up next week, and I will announce a few future projects soon afterwards.

It's been brought to my attention that the instruction sheet says "Oregon,Texas and Washington". Duh! It's too late for the first batch that went to everyone who preordered, but I will fix it for the batch that will be going to the resellers & distributors. My apologies to everyone and the residents of the great state of Maine in particular..If you already got your decals and want a corrected instruction sheet; please drop me a note with your next order and I will send you one.

This sheet has been selling really well, and I think I will sell out within a month at this rate. I will be busy with my F-94C, T-45 and F-15 releases over the next couple of months; but a second F-101B sheet will be coming as a November or December release. The subjects I have in mind for the second sheet are Texas, Minnesota and North Dakota(The Happy Hooligans).

I came across these photos last night of the ME ANG F-101B out at the Edwards AFB display. This is the aircraft just after it arrived from service, to Edwards AFB. I recalled earlier that there was a question about the white trim around the "MAINEiacs" script. I'd say these photos show it pretty clearly that they did have the white border around them while in service and that is was not just added during repainting of the aircraft for the display. I think they had a time period when they did and did not have the white border, so tossing them both on was a good call!

Anyway...must be a slow day at work here, again.

Going a bit into the "way back machine" on this but...

I recall when you were doing this sheet, there was a question in your mind on whether or not there was a white border around the "MAINEiacs" script. Well, I came across this print on eBay that shows it with the border. I'm thinking the artist may have had good reference for the painting and depicted it correctly. For me, it confirms that they did indeed fly the F-102 for a short period of time! I wish the markings on it were a bit more interesting...I may do a "what if" with the F-101B tail markings applied on it;

Thanks for bringing this print to my attention. Since I released this sheet, I had received a few e-mails from folks who had seen the aircraft up close and confirmed that there indeed was a white border around the MAINEiacs script - so I am glad we made the right choice. This also reminds me to put this sheet in the reprint queue for sometime in 2018..
