Viper carrying AIM-9s

Recommended Posts

The pic that Finn posted is from a USAF exercise at Kunsan AFB. They loaded all the Vipers with a war load and taxied them out like they were going to sortie to North Korea.

Google Kunsan Elephant Walk and you'll get more info.

Regarding the use of six AAM by the USAF on the F-16:

Reference: The Scale Viper: A Modeler's Guide to Building the F-16, by Pete Fleischmann, published by Reid Air Publications

On pages 30 ~ 39, Pete "Pig" Fleischmann details a "self portrait" 1/32 Tamiya Block 42 F-16C he flew in combat over Iraq in 1992 while assigned to the 19th Tactical Fighter Squadron.

"While in theater, my squadron was tasked with offensive and defensive counter air missions in both the fighter sweep and CAP roles. The load out of "4 x 2 x gun" (four AIM-120, two AIM-9, and 20 mm gun) is the standard air to air load for the F-16. The ALQ-119 pod loaded on the centerline was also standard for our fighter wing in 1992.

Loadout of his aircraft:

Stations 1, 2, 8, 9 = AIM-120

Stations 3 & 7 = AIM-9

Stations 4 & 6 = 370 gallon tanks

Station 5 = ALQ-119

Also, here is a photo (credit/source unknown) of a New Jersey F-16 carrying AIM-9s on stations 3 and 7:

Surprised that they are still using L model AIM-9's. Thought the USAF (especially units forward deployed) had phased them out in lieu of the X-model.

Regarding that pic, so are we supposed to be looking at a full wing-sized strike package? I see A2A loadouts, A2G, SEAD. I guess that is what we would see if the little guy up North decided to push the red button.

Did this gaggle actually take off or did they just burn a few thousand gallons of jet fuel for a really cool photo-op?

Korean KF-16s also participated in that Elephant walk. You can clearly see the lighter style camo that RoKAF uses on the 6 AAM armed birds.
