Here's my next, and probably final, build for the GB. The Roden OV-1D Mohawk, with a Cobra Company cockpit and Isradecals. If the kit decals will behave properly, I will do an OV-1D that flew during Operation Desert Storm, and if the decals are as bad as I've read, I will go with the Isradecal option for one of the 73rd Combat Intelligence Company, 2nd Military Intelligence Batallion. Both options were based in West Germany untill the early 1990's.

As said, I will use the Cobra Company cockpit set, which is really nicely detailed, and definitly an improvement over the kit parts. The fit on the sides and back is pretty good as well, but on the floor, quite some sanding is needed.

Dry fit:

As the Mohawk is very tail heavy, a lot of lead is required to keep it on 3 wheels. Roden says 19 grams, but CC suggest 40 grams. So that's what I did, and this is how 40 grams of lead looks:

Which all has to be cramped under the floor and behind the cockpit:

Some paint airbrushed on the cockpit and the seat dryfitted:

Another area on the kit that needs improvement, are the exhausts. Roden supplies these as a two part assembly, which results in a nasty seam. For this, you can get replacements from Cobra Company, Quickboost or Eduard, or make your own. I tried the last option, and cut some styrene tube to size, and sanded untill I got the right angle on it. It's still a bit thick on the pic, but the edges have been thinned down now:

Nice start

you should really consider using the nail polish remover technique for all that putty youll save time and frustration ! plus it wont damage the panel lines

Coming along nicely, working on the cockpit now. This is the radar scope:

Most major pieces are done:

Cockpit is just about ready, only two handles need to be attached, and I can assemble the canopy:

Loadout will only consist of a pair of fueltanks, which are pretty nice. The swaybraces are really something other manufacturers could take as an example:

Update time!

Canopy has been masked, and assembled. I found that the easiest way to do is to glue the windscreen on first, and after that the top piece. This way, you're sure the windscreen fits, and this piece has the most complex curves. The toppiece has to be trimmed down a bit to fit, but that's not too hard. Same goes for the side windows, but this too is pretty easy.

Windscreen and toppiece fitted, note the small amount of putty needed:

All closed up, painted black and ready for the grey coat:

And here it is painted grey. I forgot to preshade it, but I think I will leave it that way:

I like the clean look of it, so if you weren't going for a heavy weathered look, subsequent washes should make her look good.

Thanks. I think that washes should be good enough indeed.

Looks very impressive.

I always though that aircraft screamed WHIF tilt wing capabilities.

Looks like a smaller version of an Osprey.

Thanks. It's a bit of a weird design, isn't it. :)

Here's a new pic, sprayed some more black on it, around the exhausts, tips of the nacelles, and some antennas. Started to mask for the walkways now. Roden gives you just some basic outline decals for these, which you have to fill with paint yourself. Isradecal doesn't provide any walkways at all, and not even a topview on the instruction sheet.

So, I'm painting them all instead, using the Roden instructions, and photos of the real thing, since Roden simplified them a bit. I also found out I need to repaint the black leading edge on the wings. They should be about 50% in chord of what they now are. I also re-positioned the blade antenna behind the canopy. I had it too much to the centreline.

Hmmm, I'm starting this F/A-18F, would that count? Not sure if I could finish it within a month, though.
