Does Tamiya plan to release a P-51B/C in 1/32?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I don't follow the news on WW2 kits as much anymore, so I was wondering if someone would bring me up to speed on this. Lately I've found a project to just got me really passionate about, and while I'm doing the reasearch I've been looking for a kit. Has anyone heard if Tamiya is planning on releasing a 1/32 P-51B/C? I normally don't spend the money to go all out on a project, but this would be an exception. If not, I'll just work on the Trumpeter kit.

Thanks in advance!!!

Ah, OK. So I guess they're the Apple of the modeling world. Thanks guys! Guess I'll do you guys a favor and spend the time and resources on the Trumpeter kit so the Tamiya'll one will show up like a day or two after I'm done.

Tamiya plays its cards very close on upcoming releases, it's rare to even get solid rumours more than a few weeks before announcement. Given that a B/C would require a new wing and a new fuselage, I don't see one coming soon. The likely next 1/32 release for Tamiya will be an F-51D, with the extra sprues needed for a post-war Mustang (Cuffless HS prop, rockets, etc) based on how they handled the Spitfire VIII/IX/XVI series and how they handled their 1/48 and 1/72 P-51D Mustangs. After that who knows, they may start adding to their Mustang family, they could revisit their Spitfire family. I'd love to see them do a MkXIV, which would require less new bits than a P-51B) or they could do something entirely new. P-47? F4U-1? something else?.

Now even though I think $140 is kinda steep for a kit, I'd jump on a Spitfire MK. II!!! A Korean War vintage Mustang would be nice, but also would like to see them do one of the super long range Mustangs that were used in the PTO (with correct drop tanks of course.

LOL, thank you .Even thought I rather have it in 1/72 first.

If they ever do one in 1/32, then 1/72 better not be far behind! Getting mighty irritated with them, as that's the one no-brainer license to print money subject I can't believe they didn't do first when they got back into that scale! :bandhead2:

I've probably got at least six other manufacturers kits that would quickly be replaced and would add more as there's many subjects I'd like to build... definitely more than D-models I have in my collection, which manufacturers seem to think is so popular.

might have to have a look at the Trumpeter kit.

Don't do it unles you're prepared to do some plastic grinding, filling, sanding and modifications to get a reasonably accurate B stang. This kit is not from the "A" team at Trumpeter and is rife with errors such as the engine exhausts that seem as though they were added as an afterthought instead of being part of the engine (and stick out from the cowl WAY too far). The canopy aft windows that are nowhere near the prototype although I must admit that when I first inspected this kit, I did not see the problem with it and won't be an easy fix. The wing ammo bays that are for the P-51D instead of the B (too long). The cockpit that needs to be tweaked to have the armor plate be as it should be (not a big deal). The landing gear inner doors that are shaped slightly funny and way too thin in cross section. There are some other errors/omissions but if you want to tackle the kit, be ready for this and a few more things. Christian (aka Tourist) did an examination of the kit when it came out and I know of no better person to comment on it than he. I think if you search, you might find his comments either here or at LSP.

As for Tamiya releasing a P-51B; I can only reiterate what Jennings said... Nobody outside Tamiya's sphere of influence knows and those that do ain't saying. Personally, I'd love to see a Tamiya P-51B but I feel that it'll be a few more years before that may happen. I hope I'm wrong but it seems it's a cycle that repeats itself. Tamiya has to run the course of the D Mustang first and do a P-51K, an F-6D/K and an F-51D. The tooling is set up to do all three as can be gleaned by what you get in the P-51D boxing.

Tim, you're too kind, there's still plenty of stuff I don't know about Mustangs.

I never bought the Trumpeter P-51B because I could see too many flaws on the pictures (I did comment on some of these).

Like everyone else here I really hope Tamiya will release a P-51B but there's no way to tell.

A 1/32 Hasegawa P-51H would also be great.
